If the barrel is over 16" you would be in illegal posession of an unregistered AOW per federal NFA rules.

If it's registered in CA as pistol/handgun then the lower is still considered a handgun, even w/o the upper attached.

Uhhh....no. Look it up. A pistol (or buttstockless firearm) with a barrel over 16" is considered an AOW.

I know it sounds wierd and stupid and makes no sense......cuz that's how it sounds to me too.....but that's gun laws for you.

i think you are confusing the NFA "any other weapon" with a "title one other firearm" which includes stripped lowers and buttstockless shotguns

Opps...you're right....AOW refers to smoothbore firearms under 26". That doesnt change the fact that a 16" barrel on a handgun changes its status.

But if it's registered as a pistol, it can't have a barrel over 16. So if it's not a rifle cuz it has no buttstock and its not a pistol cuz the barrel is to long...then what is it? And which rules apply?

Just put it in the trunk. It is consider as a locked container.

sorry for the confusion on the NFA issue....that was my error. However that putting rifle length uppers on an AR pistol does create other issues one should be aware of.

You could find yourself converting your pistol to a long gun....which is ok......but then you cannot convert it back to a pistol once you do so.

As stated.....just get a lockable case or transport in the trunk. seperating the upper does not change its pistol status. It's a pistol.....transport it according to pistol transport rules.....period.

Big 5 tennis racket case, lock the zippers together with a small padlock, cheep & discrete.

I have a Milwakee plastic tool case, I cut the blowmold out & put foam in, lock tabs & fits right in being a contractor.
