    Hammerless (striker fired) 1911 . . . huh?

Seems that some of the LEO folks are asking several manufacturers to make a modification to their 1911 models specifically to make the 1911 more politically correct. Apparently the "Cocked & Locked" 1911, carried in an officer's holster is something that scares the sheeple. So a couple agencies have sent out word to the manufacturers that they are looking for some sort of hammerless 1911.

As I understand it, they want the thumb safety of the 1911. They want the superb SA trigger of the 1911. They simply don't want the exposed hammer.

    What is your source??

seems like striker fire would defeat the purpose of the amazing trigger

My source(s) is inside the industry.

But specifically they want the 1911 SA trigger. They just don't want it to trip a hammer, they want it to trip an internal striker. Their (the LEO agencies) desire is to keep the trigger system, as well as all the other ergonomics, of the 1911.

I don't understand how making a 1911 hammerless makes it politically correct.

People feel uneasy seeing the hammer back on a gun.

Exactly. The Sheeple get all queazy when they see a "cocked and locked" gun.

Extend slide over beaver tail to enclose hammer? Would make for one helluva slide bite. Maybe need to add bulk to move shooter hand lower killing ergos?

Wouldn't that simply make it similar to the old 1903 Hammerless model?

that would seem to satisfy the concerns of not seeing a cocked and locked open hammer of the current design.

a hammer is still part of the design, just not seen.

This is a fun exercise. Is the requirement to eliminate the visual of the external hammer or to actually eliminate the hammer?

                    Interesting article on a "1903 Model 1911": http://www.cylinder-slide.com/m2008artah.shtml

This retains the nice 1911 trigger.

If the hammer must be eliminated and a striker required, maybe an oversized Mauser 1914 would work? I think it could be done, so long as "double strike" capability is not a requirement.

Wow, that is the first time I have heard of anyone being made uncomfortable by the hammer of a handgun. It's a gun, what do you expect for crying out loud. It's like complaining about seeing a big butcher's knife at a supermarket or restaurant

Aside from having a polymer frame, doesn't the M&P with thumb safety already kind of fill this niche? There are APEX trigger kits to make the trigger nicer, though I'm sure still not to the level of a 1911.

Ummm, how about just train some more? I highly doubt LEO will be shooting guns out of the perps' hands or shooting them at 50 yards, glocks work just fine. The main safety of your gun is your finger. This thread fails.

it amazing how the sight of a hammer cocked can psychologically eat away at a humans mind causing so many thoughts to process through it allowing the carrier to feel uneasy about it. On the other hand a striker fired 1911 would be quite interesting.
