revolvers sw or taurus

I'm looking the get a revolver. The only two I'm interested in are the Taurus Tracker 627 .357 and the Smith and Wesson 627 pro. I understand that the SS is.more expencive and a better nameand one more round. Is it worth the extra $300-$400 over the Taurus? In reviews I've seen absolute praise for the Taurus and a few horror stories as well. I'm not looking for a comp gun, just a companion piece for a .357 lever gun. Any input will be appreciated. Thank you.

I haven't heard a whole lot of bad about the Taurus revolvers. Based upon what you said you want it for I'd pocket the $300-$400.

I sold, shot and played with both for many years. there is a reason why you don't hear horror stories about S&W revolvers. You wouldn't think much of revolvers if you only had a Taurus. Shoot the two side by side and you'll know why S&W sets the standards for revolvers. Save your trouble and buy S&W.

I'm in the same position, looking for a .357 revolver and looking at Taurus as an option. I know they're owned by the same parent company as S&W, but that doesn't mean same manufacturing. Taurus' do come with a "Unlimited Lifetime Repair Policy" too.

It would be nice to save some money but I haven't shot one, so I can compare it to the S&W and Ruger GP100 I've shot before.

I have a Taurus Tracker 627 and am one of the horror stories you mentioned. Brand new out of the box severe timing issue and sloppy lockup. Bad enough we could have had a kaboom. Off to Florida for repair, comes back 3 1/2 weeks later a little improved with the note we should have been shooting .357 rather than .38 special. Back down to Florida again and another 3 1/2 weeks and after the second trip, it is working correctly. The shop where I had purchased it had two other Trackers that were also troublesome. When confronted at the Shot Show by the owner of the LGS, the U.S. rep had said that they knew of the problems and had written a letter to the boys in South America. Yup, someone wrote a letter.

I have a Smith 686 and a Ruger GP100 as well as the Taurus. In a gunfight, after the first two break I'll consider picking up the Taurus.

Do you think they wanted you to shoot the magnums instead of the 38's so the kaboom would kill you and you wouldn't be bothering them with complaint? (JK)

I like S&W revolvers a bunch (ruger revolvers, too). I've only owned one Taurus (semi-auto) and it sullied me on the brand to an extant that I'd rather have a sharpened stick I could rely on than a Taurus that would give me a crapshoot for results. Of course your mileage may vary.

S&W hands down. If you want to save a little money pick up a used (pre-lock) S&W.

I just picked up a gently used 586 (no dash) for $550 from my LGS.

I and my family own four (4) Taurus pistols. Not one horror story. Never owned a SnW, but did have a Colt King Cobra once upon a time--loved it, but unless you have some serious wood for the Smith, pocket the cash and take the Taurus.

I have multiple revolvers in both brands. I've had a cylinder lock up on one S&W and a cylinder lock up on one Taurus. I have a friend with one revolver each in both brands and he's only had problems with his S&W.

If your budget allows, you'll likely be better off with a S&W. But if your budget is tight, a Taurus is fine.
