best .22cal 1911 conversion kit

I am looking at the different conversion kits for the 1911. Looking for any opinions. Particulary the kimber conversion kit from cabela's ( got gift certificates to burn). Any recommendations are welcomed.

#1, IF you could find one, is a Fred Kart conversion unit. No longer made, but VERY accurate.

#2, the current incarnation of the Kart kit, would be Marvel...NOTHING currently in production is even close. www.marvelprod.com. It will be more $$ than what's below, but you pay for accuracy AND great customer service if you have a question or concern.

#3, Kimber/Cabela's/a ton of house brands from Jonathan Ciener. All will go boom when the trigger is pulled. Accuracy (try 50yds. standing with one hand on the gun) will suck compared to numbers 1 or 2. Pop cans at 50, perhaps. Asking for customer 'service' from Ciener will be a unique experience.

My Kimber conversion was somewhat accurate for close range plinking but not reliable at all. I tried all different kinds & quantities of lube and it never functioned 100%, the slide just wouldn't cycle full stroke reliably with hi-velocity stuff. With Federal bulk stuff I'd have to hand-rack it almost 50% of the time because of failures to eject and feed, and to get it to work at even 50% I had to use very light oil very sparingly. Anything heavier dragged the slide too much. With hyper velocity stuff like Stingers I achieved about 85% reliability but with the cost of Stingers it wasn't very economical anymore. Mind you, this was all installed on a Kimber TLE RL II and using the expensive Kimber .22 mags.

I sold it and bought a Ruger Mark III. Far more accurate as the Kimber conversion (the Ruger does <1.25" 10-shot groups at 50 yards with Wal-Mark Federal bulk stuff, and the Kimber could hold that at 15-20 yards with Stingers) and it eats almost everything I feed it with excellent reliability.

If I were to buy another 1911 .22 upper it would be a Marvel and nothing else.

I've always been partial to the old colt factory conversions, but I've never played with a marvel so... take it for what its worth.

My Kimber conversion runs great, is accurate enough for the plinking I do, and only gave me a few hang ups when I first got it. It eats a mix of ammo. I am very happy with it.

Anyways, I have an older Ciener conversion atop my Springfield 1911 GI model. It's accurate, and shoots everything, including the Remington bulk stuff that all my other .22's hate.

I've been hearing good things about the Tactical Solutions conversion that is due out anytime.

So much so that when I ordered my Buckmark parts I got talked into it went on to pre-order one. We'll see how it is, but if it's like the Buckmark parts they make it will be top notch.

I have had my Colt conversion kit since 1958, many thousands of rounds and never a problem. It eats any brand of ammo, and is very accurate But they are not easy to find for sale. Regards, Cliff

Hi,I'm new here to this site.I'm interested in long range competition shooting.I was wondering if i should go to a match somewhere to talk with people there first,to see if its an enviroment i want to be a part of.Also, would a store bought .308 or .223 rifle be a good starting point?,or would it be better to get a custom made rifle?.I would appreciate any input you could give me.thanks chris

I would certainly recommend visiting a match similar to what you want to shoot.
You will meet a bunch of good guys that will give you all sorts of equipment advice and make you try their guns.
If you were interested in action type shooting, I actually maintain a complete extra set of gear that I share to get new shooters into the action shooting sports.

I've got the Kimber conversion w/adjustable sights and haven't had any problems whatsoever (other than a few FTE during the break in period). I've shot over a thousand rounds so far using bulk Federal ammo. Mind you I'm using all Kimber OEM (Raptor II & Kimber mags). It is recommended that you use plated bullets though. I can hit a gallon milk jug consistently or a 15oz. shampoo bottle (when it's upright) at the 40 yd tin can range.
