    sig p6

my sig p6 (germany) has feeding issues with some of the ammo I feed it. I have to rack the slide every time after each shot.

    anyone have solutions?

    1. Problem with ball or hollow points? - Feed ramp may need to be recontoured by a gunsmith to feed different loads reliably. Some feedramps only feed ball reliable and need work.

    2. Magazine issue - Check your magazines, make sure all work, springs good. In semiauto pistols the magazine is the weakest link.

    3. Serious limp wristing? - Have someone else shoot your gun to determine if same thing happens.

    4. Incorrect recoil spring weight? damaged? bent? ect. - Purchase new recoil spring or guide rod

    5. Improper fit of slide to frame, i.e. rubbing? - PITA fix

    6. Seriously low pressure rounds? Reloaded ammo? - Use only factory

    7. Could always just figure out which ammo it does not like and not use it in your P6 - nuff said

Guessing games are fun Hope you resolve it though. I would think that it would either be #1 or #2 though.

Make sure you are using factory mags, sat away from pro mags.

The early P6's were known to only feed ball ammo reliably. Check the date code on your P6 to find out if it's from the early 80's. I believe SIG updated the P6 in 1989 with a recontuored feed ramp on the barrel to correct the problem with feeding hollowpoint ammunition.

Are you saying that your P6 is extracting the spent case, but not picking up the next round from the magazine? But it will pickup and chamber the round consistently when you manually rack the slide.

Sounds like a tried magazine spring problem...not being able to get the next round up fast enough before the slide travels over it.

Did you disassemble and clean your magazines before you started shooting?
Did you re-assemble the magazine properly?

you guys brought up good suggestions. much appreciated.

factory ammo jammed up a little bit maybe five out of 100 times, but I lubed the feeding ramp and it worked well.

reloaded ammo didnt work at all, thats when I had to rack the slide every time.

hollows shoot very smoothly (even better than practice rounds)

the problem was that the round wouldn't get chambered in time so the slide racked ahead of time (both factory and reload ammo)

also I found that the casing of the round would sometimes get stuck in the chamber after the bullet was fired. this happened only twice

it says 06/96 on the side of the sig

You shouldn't need to lube the feed ramp at all. If it only did it with the reloads, or certain ammo then it could be attributed to the profile of the bullet or the overall length of the cartridge. You said it has done it with factory ammo as well. I would replace the mag springs, and just for kicks the recoil spring as well. Also make sure the recoil spring is on correctly. The smaller end or opening of the spring goes on the guide rod first. Good luck.

Sounds like you need some springs. If home defense loaded hollowpoints cycle but nothing else does then probably both the magazine spring and the recoil spring are worn out.

If I was ordering springs I would probably replace the mainspring at the same time also, just to be sure.

SIG-SAUER P225 9MM, XP MAG SPRING +5% Pak of (however many magazines you have)
Recoil Springs Factory Standard.: 16 Lb
Hammer Springs Factory Standard.: 24 Lb.

                Edited to add:

This is true. Promags in the P225 usually don't work even if you replace the springs. They are the wrong shape.

                Edited again:

If you have a 96 make P6 then you already have the feedramp fix paintballdad talked about. You will be able to cycle HP ammo just fine after you replace your springs.

If you have rounds getting stuck that is another problem, and is yet another part. Replace the springs first then give the extractor a good scrubbing with a nylon (the kind for teeth) toothbrush. If it still happens then post here again.
