    45acp revolvers

I'm considering a 45ACP revolver, thought it'd be cool to get my first wheelgun in a caliber I already shoot.

Price isn't really an issue here, what's the best out there? Just curious, the only 2 models that really come to mind are the S&W 325 Thunder Ranch and the S&W625 JM series.

I know the M1917 is a nifty little gun, but those are hard to find and although can still probably shoot well are probably better suited as collector's pieces. Seems like I'm fairly limited on 45acp options.

Why think new, there are more options if you get a used 625, not the JM one, but pre-JM. They are really cool guns. If you want a blue instead of a SS, get a 25, if you find (I think) a dash 5, you can shoot either 45 Long Colt of 45 ACP. I'm sure that I will be corrected if I'm wrong here.

Do all SW guns come with a PC option? I'm unfamiliar with how their Performance Center shop works, is it a custom shop?

I have a Les Baer TRS and I do love semicustom handguns, thanks for that note. Are 625JM guns inherently PC guns, or do you have to order a 625 Performance Center?

They are out there used, it depends on what your plans are. I bought a 1955 target for range work, it makes me look good. You would have to put a lot of money into a 1911 to have it shoot as good as this 55 year old revolver that has been around the block a few times.

I have always wanted a .45 revolver as well. The people that own them really must like them because they want a ton of money for them. You can get a used S&W .357 here for $500. A decent .45 revolver is $800++ minimum to find a newer decent one. I found some nice one's at Buds a while back but just not willing to pay double.

I like (and own) the pre-lock 625 (model of 1989) and a couple model 25's, all are great shooters and among my favorite handguns. I have cokebottle grips on all of mine, like the ones Kurac pictured and love em. I would have to say I prefer the high polished blueing and balance of the 6.5" model 25 the best.

If you do go for a model 25 you should measure the cylinders chamber throats and ensure it is approximately .451 diameter, some of the model 25's had oversized chamber throats at .456-457 and accuracy suffers a bit.

And no, one chamberred for .45 colt will not shoot .45acp; different cylinders are needed as .45 colt is a rimmed, longer cartridge and the .45acp cylinders are cut for moon clips for use with the semi-rimmed automatic pistol cartridge.

625, gotta pay the price though especially if you want a 3 inch.

And a 1917 works just like the day of was made.
