Is it possible to swap out a 9mm 4" service or 5" tactical barrel/slide on my 4" .40 cal service model XD? I was looking into buying an XD 9/XD 9 Tactical, but if I could buy just the barrel/slide and a couple magazines, it might be cheaper and more convenient to do so. Thanks!

I know you can install a 9mm kit on the .40 cal but I don't think you can install a .40 cal on a 9mm.Is it possible to swap out a 9mm 4" service or 5" tactical barrel/slide on my 4" .40 cal service model XD? So if you own a .40 cal (4" service or 5" tactical) you can buy a barrel and mags and convert to 9mm (or even .357 I think) but not the other way.

does anyone know if it would be possible to buy a slide and barrel for a 9mm? any idea what those would cost? I'm wondering if it would even be much cheaper than buying another gun...thoughts?"I'm just a peckerwood who lives in the hills with too many guns."- Bobby Lee Swagger, Shooter

I have an XD .40 service and I have put a friends .40 tactical on it and it fired and cycled the ammo.
I know you can get a 9mm/.357Sig conversion barrels but as mentioned, good luck getting the slide (can be expensive).I support the NRA, if you are not in, you can't win.

I don't think you can buy a complete slide from Springfield. Give them a call, but I believer it's been tried before.
Probably easier just to buy the conversion. The barrel swap is pretty straight forward.

My 2 cents worth
Well, I have a XD service 357sig. Even in TX, 357sig is about $34/50box fmj. So I went looking for a Service 40 S&W barrel. All I could find was a PORTED TACTICAL EFK aftermarket 2nd hand S/Steel $75. The barrel dropped in OK - Filled a 357sig 12rnd mag with 40 S&W ammo and went off to the range.I don't think you can buy a complete slide from Springfield. You can imagine the looks I got at the outdoor range when I stepped up to the line with a service XD that had an extra 3" of ported S/Steel sticking out the front of it.
Well... let me say this.... NO FTFs, No FTEs, LOWER recoil by far and $6 a box less for the ammo.
Let me tell you though - when I get home from the range, the 357sig barrel and ammo go back in for home defense. I use CorBon's Powr-ball for low house penetration but maximum BG stoppage. I also use Heine Straight 8's Trijicon Night Sights in the vertical 2 dot Fig 8 configuration. (65 with poor sight): Much easier and quicker to gain targets in than in the 3 dot horizontal plane (IMHO)

From what I read the frames are the same so you can put a xd9 slide and barrel on your xd40. You can't buy this from SA, and a xd9 slide and barrel sold for $200 here on calguns but you dont see those parts often.Comment

you will be better off buying the tactical rather than slide and barrel. you will spend about 400 on everything you need. if you watch the forums you can grab one for 500-550$ range. much better deal. most will come with holster and stuff.Glock 34 Sig Stainless 1911 RailedComment

Unfortunately, that's not how things work in real life. Pow'R Ball is not even close to a good choice for defensive use. There's no reason why you shouldn't buy Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, or Winchester Ranger T. If you want Corbon ammunition use the DPX loads. Take some time to read and learn:Let me tell you though - when I get home from the range, the 357sig barrel and ammo go back in for home defense. Over penetration is that last thing you should worry about.
Constructive criticism. Good choice with the Heine Straight 8's. Good luck.Comment

for 200-250 dollars you can have a barto barrel fit to your 40 cal xd service or tactical pistol. You can use 40 cal mags to feed 9mm ammo. I have run up to 10k rounds of 9mm through my conversion barrel for competition use and around 20k rounds of 40 cal ammo before that. I use the original recoil spring for both calibers. I'm still on the original spring. I do have many other modifications on the gun though. I load all my own ammo. My 9mm load is 970 fps and is very light, too light for some sanctioned competitions. My 40 cal reloads are also light loads with a 135 grain berry's bullet. He who dies with the most tools/toys wins
