Need help dialing in LaserMax Unimax Micro

Hi:

I am a handgun newbie, have spent most of my shooting life with shotguns and I don't know a whole lot about the finer points of handguns.

I just mounted a LaserMax UniMax Micro on my Ruger SR22. I took it to the range today and tried to dial in the laser. I put the target out at 10 yards as the instructions suggest, shot, adjusted, shot adjusted and most of my groups are still high and left from where I am aiming.

Should I be trying to setup the laser so that it co-witnesses with the iron sights with the laser visible just above the front sight?

The AR22 is small and light and it seems that if I really want to sight in the laser accurately, should I try to hunt down some kind of rest? No matter how steady I hold the pistol, at 30 feet, the laser is still moving around quite a bit which makes it difficult to tell where it is actually being aimed versus where I am hitting the target at.

Should normal procedure be making sure that the SR22s iron sights are dialed in first? I have not touched them. Now that I think about it, that is probably my issue, I need to turn off the laser and sight in the SR22's sights first? Once again, how can you really accurately dial in iron sights unless you have a rest?

Any tips, tricks, suggestions? I know how to lead a clay whether its bouncing on the ground in SC or a weird angle in International Trap but this trying to sight in handguns is a whole new thing for me and I am lost.

I am in the same boat as you. I recently aquired a SR22PB with a crimson trace railmaster laser. I am no expert, but I believe you are going about it the wrong way. Regardless of platform, you should always sight in your iron sights. After you dial that in, you can always dial in the laser based on the iron sights without even firing a shot. Then you can go to the range and fine tune it to your liking.

Thanks, I think that is what I need to do too. Great little gun but I am not shooting accurately with it and I don't know if it is my poor technique or the sights are way off or a combination of the two. I need some lessons I think. I have watched lots of videos and it seems as if there is a lot of conflicting technique out there when it comes to hand gunning.
