Shop for Black Nitriding or Melonite

I am looking to refinish one of my 1911's. Can anyone recommend a place to black nitride it or melonite?

I had my 1911 done a few years back by Burlington Engineering down in Orange. They did a superb job and the turn-around time was less than a week, IIRC. I highly recommend them.

It doesn't mention anything on their site about Black nitride or melonite. Do they provide this service as well?

But there is nothing special about melonite that salt bath nitrocarburization by other trademarked names doesn't do.

Techplate in Anaheim is the other shop I would contact, they do all types of plating and processing (on guns) and have a very quick turnaround. I have used them and was completely satisfied, but I prefer hardchrome.

Nighthawk Custom will do refinishing in black nitride. My understanding is it's offered as the standard black finish on their 1911s now.

I know that, but the problem is that a lot of people do not know that there are quite a few names for the same/similar process. So if someone knows it by Melonite or black nitride, etc, then maybe they'll recommend a place. I don't give a hoot what their process name is.

He emailed me recently stating he is back logged and won't take any work other than full custom builds. I was looking at his Atranite too.

Keep in mind that mailing/shipping your gun anywhere to get the work done will incur an immediate cost premium of $60-70 to ship it via whatever "overnight" type of service that you use. Plus whatever the refinisher charges you to ship it back to you.

Getting it done locally costs you a few hours driving time and the cost of gas.

Are they a gun shop? Do you bring the gun already stripped to them?

No they're a metal treating place, but they do a lot of refinishing on guns so they are very familiar with them.

I brought mine in stripped, as there were some parts that I did not want treated, but they have a gunsmith there that can disassemble and reassemble your gun if you can't do it.
