    Project P226 - UPDATED POST #22

Background: This Sig P226 is a West German SIG with JJ markings so its about 24 years old. I have owned it for 5 years and to my knowledge not much has been done to it.

Project Info: The gun itself shoots great and has always performed nicely, however I decided I wanted to replace a few springs, the recoil spring and the trigger bar spring to be exact. The trigger bar spring was one of the older springs and based on some research here, I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to the newer style of spring.

So with all of that in mind I decided that I would go a bit further since the gun definitely shows it age, with some wear on the slide, frame and barrel, and decided to have the frame and slide cerakoted. Then I decided to polish the barrel and guide rod which I did on my own.

I also decided while I am at it to do an SRT kit upgrade and well has having new night sights installed. So by the end of it this has been pretty much a rebuild of sorts. For any of those interested I am listing below the prices and parts that I have upgraded. Unfortunately I do not have pics of the finished product yet, since I lost the hammer stop and had to order a new one, but I should have them up soon. However I do have some pics of the progress I have made so far as well as an older pic of the gun before all of this.

If anyone has any questions about the work or anything let me know. Also I am not a Gunsmith but I do tinker and have some mechanical experience, YouTube videos are a great resource for disassembling the firearm.

    Before:

    Polished Barrel and Guide Rod:

    Cerakoted Frame and Slide:

    Parts list and Prices:
SIG P226 Parts Kits from Top Gun Supply $22.95
SIG P226 SRT Kit from Top Gun Supply $69.95
Trijicon Night Sights from Botach Tactical $85.00
Cerakote Work done by HP Customs $225.00 also installed the Night Sights.

I don't see much wrong with it to begin with. I like weapons with a little "patina" to them.

        Looks good so far.

It was one of those things where I noticed that edges were thin on the bluing and what not and just a few cosmetic items that I noticed. I think a lot of it was wanting to give it some love rather than getting something new since this was my first pistol.

When I saw the wear on it, I was going to say Cerakoting would be a good idea, since you don't even have any dings or deep scratches. Sounds like fun; let us know how it turns out (with pics, of course )

Btw, where can I get me one of dem West Deutsche Sigs? Have you had yours for a while?

I have had mine for 5 years or so. Got a pretty good deal from Uncle Pauls in Ventura at the time. Its one of those things you just have to keep your eye's open for.

Did you upgrade the mainspring and strut assembly while you were doing the springs?

Did they replace the roll pins when they Cere-koted the slide?

                Nice color combo

I did not upgrade the main spring and strut assembly but its something I will consider. Because it's an older SIG I am not sure if I can upgrade them since I seem to have an older version of the assembly then that what was pictured on my Bench Mat.

I did replace the roll pins myself as they were part of the Parts Kit I bought. I gave the slide and frame to HP Customs fully dis-assembled minus the sights since I did not have the sight tool to do it myself.

I would have kept the guide rod/barrel black to match the slide, but that's just a personal opinion. I'm diggin the FDE color though. What color will the controls be (trigger, slide stop, ect)?

The controls were coated black to match the slide. I hear you on the black guide rod and barrel, however my barrels original finish was pretty worked and I wanted it to look fresh. I don't have much experience in doing bluing so I opted to polish it since I am experienced in polishing. I also wanted to polish the feed ramp so I figured I would do the whole thing. Wacky logic I know. When I placed the barrel in the slide it did look pretty good, so I will be sure to get shots of it when I take pics of the final product. Should be done by Wednesday or so depending on when this hammer stop arrives.

The new mainspring assembly, just slips in where the old one used to be. The boot takes the place of the flat metal piece retaining the spring. The only thing is that the assembly will not fit into the original plastic grips

Is there any benefit to making this upgrade as far as performance?
