    Handgun Transporting

Hey guys, complete noob here. I have a quick question.

Is it okay to transport a handgun on University campus, locked in the trunk of my car?

I'm pretty sure the answer is No, if you are parking in the campus parking lot. But you are fine if you park on public property and walk to the campus.

    EDIT:

It would be a good exercise for you to explore the CSUN web site and find the information - administration and faculty put lots of interesting things on school web sites.

However, I predict, without looking, that firearms are banned on school property and the penalty to student is up to expulsion.
The code is in reference to this:
    (i) Notwithstanding Section 25605, any person who brings or
possesses a firearm upon the grounds of a campus of, or buildings
owned or operated for student housing, teaching, research, or
administration by, a public or private university or college, that
are contiguous or are clearly marked university property, unless it
is with the written permission of the university or college
president, his or her designee, or equivalent university or college
authority, shall be punished by imprisonment pursuant to subdivision
    (h) of Section 1170 for one, two, or three years. Notwithstanding
subdivision (k), a university or college shall post a prominent
notice at primary entrances on noncontiguous property stating that
firearms are prohibited on that property pursuant to this
    subdivision.

          Just my 2 cents

when in doubt, take it out.
make sure its in a locked, hard case container, so you're covered legally walking to and from your car, and in case they can find a way to declare your trunk not a locked container via ski pass through or something else.

If it's in the trunk, don't park on government(post office for example) property, and me personally I wouldn't go near schools either

Why make it easy for them? California hates guns.

In a few more years you wont be able to take any of your guns anywhere.

You will buy them at an FFL, have them shipped to a certified range depository. Then be allowed 1-15 minute supervised visit in a controlled environment with your gun per quarter.

Whoa! Run this by me again.

So if one is just going to the range and no school zone area transporting a handgun in a vehicle such as a van where there is no trunk, it must be in a locked container? I really must pay attention to the laws more other than every 15 or 20 years.

When did this bit of insanity occur?

Jim, I know it truly is shocking, but there's so much stuff to stay on top of now. The idea is to offer up so blasted much hassle factor that you'll just toss in the towel and melt down your guns for paperwights!

Well, Thank You. I'm rollin' up my sleeves now. I'm not moving out of this state so I'll just play their stupid games until we (through continual funding of Calguns, et. al.,) take the damn place back. Geeezz!*#^!*

Do you know whats retarded? A trunk of a car is classified as a "locked container", but if it is in your car, like next to you, it isnt. That makes no sense. Technically speaking, a car is a locked "container" since the doors are locked.

Also, if it is okay to walk around your house with a loaded gun, why isnt it legal to do so in a car. A car can be one's "home". Alot of people in this economy cant afford to pay a mortgage so they live in RV's or in their cars.

Sometime before 1988, I think; the exception to concealed carry without LTC, out of a vehicle, at 12026.2 was 1988; don't know exactly when 12025 (the law against unlicensed CC) and 12026.1, exception for carry IN a vehicle, were passed, but had to be sometime before 1988. Can't get at Lexis for this just now; it's in the hard copy of West's, too.

In your vehicle without the locked container lets you have access; in a locked container, or in your trunk, theoretically does not.

It's true that some actually live in RVs; when those are PARKED and used as residences, even temporary residences, they qualify. Haven't seen anything that says the same for living in a car. When either is moving, the locked-container stuff is in effect.

There was and I think still is a designation under CA DMV vehicle registration specifically called 'House car' in the regs. I had a van registered as such some short years ago. In order to qualify you have to have a bed, stove, sink, water supply, at least a porta potty, thinking that's all. These may be built-in or some may be camp type equipment.

How it would hold up in court is unknown, but it's sure spelled out clearly: HOUSE CAR. RV's are the same type registration.
