    Help please trigger vs sights/poi

I'd like to purchase my first handgun soon but ran into a problem after I rented the two I thought I had narrowed it down to at a range.

    1st is a mid-size compact 9mm
    1) I picked it up and the thing points itself right where it should.
    2) I had 56/60 shots land in the 10 @ about 8 yards (thought I was doing terrific and THIS IS THE ONE). 4 were about 1" high.
    3) Trigger reset is awesome.
    4) Hand fits just fine on the grip.

    2nd is a sub-compact 9mm
    1) I was concerned about my pinky not having a spot on the grip.
    2) I picked it up and held it out at the target and the muzzle is low, so I have to bring it up to align properly at the target.
    3) The trigger reset is much longer than the mid-size, but had I shot the guns in the opposite order I may not have noticed it as easily.
    4) I landed every single shot in the 10 ring @ the same distance...

I've read the sub-compact brand has "better" sights than the other brand. Is it possible that the difference in results is only because of the sights?

There is an $80 trigger upgrade for the sub-compact that makes it much better (according to reviews) and there are many options for sights on the mid-size.

Given the decision to make yourself do you go with the one that you actually shoot better (and eventually upgrade the trigger) or the one with the trigger you prefer and eventually upgrade sights???

The sub-compact is $50 cheaper, so with the trigger its $30 more than the other stock.

From your description I would say you shot both guns about equally well. This is a guess, but I'm betting the longer trigger reset on the sub compact slowed you down some, accounting for the slightly improved accuracy. Pick the one you like best and that best fits your intended use. Unless you are buying a CCW, I would bet you will eventually shoot the larger gun better than you would shoot the sub.

Couple quick thoughts before others might chime in

Didn't consider the longer reset slowing me down, great point.

I was more focused on maintaining my grip when firing the sub-compact because my pinky finger hangs off. So I'm only holding it with the middle and ring finger. That might have also helped.

It's funny how you avoided naming the brands you are comparing...I thought it was pretty obvious, but I won't give it away for those who haven't figured it out.

I'd go with the one (sub-compact)you shot better with and upgrade the trigger parts...the resulting trigger will be much improved over the mid-sized guns' (I have one of these and think it is great). You can play around with the interchangeable backstraps to change how it points in your hand.

I feel that the ergos of the sub-compact just make it a better handling gun

If I had named brands I am sure there would be 200 responses battling out this question and another 100 saying "search, it's been asked 1000 times."
