Smolt Conversion?

What exactly is it? Obviously it sounds like something on a Smith is being replaced by Colt parts or vise versa but i have no idea what this is. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

So its a SW frame with a colt barrel basically?

Specifically, with a Colt Python barrel on a K frame Smith. This is of course before the L frames came out - don't know if anyone still does them.

I guess I don't know the reasoning for Smolts other than contours.

Stock smith bbls are pretty damned good intrinsically.

I'd add that some folks are taking S&W 629 bbls and putting them on Ruger 44Mag single-actions for accuracy (after de-lugging, etc.). It was either Clements or maybe Jim Stroh @ Alpha Precision that was doing this.

I was told years ago that the Python barrels had a bit faster twist and the bore was just a bit tighter. What's cool about them is you get the S&W action that tunes up really well with the tighter/faster (and cooler looking) Python barrel. Together, they shoot excellent. Craig Maraviov in Woodland still builds them, and can do 'em on K, L, or N frames. He can also build Cougars (Ruger Security Six with the Python barrel). The biggest problem now seems to be finding the Python barrels. Craig's work is excellent and his turn around time, even on a conversion like this is reasonable. Here's a pic of the one he recently finished for me:

Wow, thats a nice revolver d1911. How do the colt anaconda barrels compare to the python barrels?

I was told S&W did not offer a heavy barrel K frame at the time folks started screwing on Python barrels in the 70"s. A lot guys were building them as Pin Guns, plenty of gambling

Can I say it.................. Smolts/Smythons are COOL! Do you need any other reason?

I never liked Smolts or Smythons but they evoke a certain era to me of the shooting sports just as disco suits and musice remind me of the 1970's.

I figure a Dan Wesson would be just as good and cheaper.

Does this mean to want to forget about the Dirty Harry Special you bought when the movie came out?Or the white linen shirt with wooded buttons, tight pants, feathered back hair and a shoulder rig( maybe double shoulder rig) with a S&W model 29 8-3/8" barrel. How tall were the heels of your shoes?
