No suggestions on something else can't spend more at the time. I know they are different worlds and My only two questions are these: 1) which of two has had or higher chance of having problems? 2) which company now has best turnaround time for repairs?

s&w40ve or taurus m85.ul

Of those two, you'd rather have the S&W from a quality and a warranty perspective.
The current SW40VE models are very reliable, solid guns. I owned one for a long time. They have a big, stiff trigger that mimics a double action revolver, which is where most people lose their interest in the gun. It does make it harder to shoot until you practice with it. It can be reduced somewhat by removing a spring or two, but I don't recommend it, as it's really the only safety the gun has.
It's S&W, they have good service, and their warranty will cover you as the first purchaser for any reasonable problem you have.
Taurus service and warranty, are, in my experience, less stellar. Their quality has also been up and down in my experience, you stand a better chance of getting a lemon.
That's my .02.
Of course, if you are going to buy in that price range, you'd probably be better off saving like $100 more and getting a new XD, or a nice used Glock. Both guns shoot better than the S&W due to lighter, smoother triggers even out of the box.sigpic -
My Taurus has been perfectly fine. Never have had a single failure or breakdown.
The lady at my local gun shop talked me out of purchasing the Sigma.Comment

It's not a similar pull at all. Go out to the range and try the sigma, the trigger is insanly heavy. Even if you end up taking the pig tail spring and main spring out, the trigger does get a bit lighter but it's still a long travel before it breaks.
Not trying to suggest anything but if price is the issue why not a ruger p95. It's the same price range, has great reviews, and the best turn around time for factory work.sigpic

Everyone is going to have good\bad stories with any companies customer service. For instance, everyone says Sig customer service is great but they completely dropped the ball on my Sig repairs. I had to start emailing everyone in the company before a CS manager contacted me and basically said "our bad".
These softball questions of which is better, x or y, is tough and you will get a myriad of answers and more will probably not help as you will see when you get the "save more money...get an XD".
Check out the used guns here or around local gun shops. My local gun shop has TONS of used Taurus PT92's, Rugers. Used guns at the 350$ price point is not hard to find.
A sigma pulls nothing like a glock. The sigma trigger pull is about 14 pounds.Comment

Does this guy not know how to read?
A two line post?
Never mind, saw his response.
He clearly states "i know they are different worlds." But that shouldn't stop a sly remark. He wasn't even comparing as opposed to asking about the two.Comment

thanks distro. sorry for such a short post but i have read enough post where if it is not a glock, sig, m&p ,xd or 450 or more gun everyone seems to have to say something even by asking not to say something people cant help themselves. its ok. i know they just want to help more. but just to let you know i have the xd. pretty much i have the taurus on layaway and dont think i want it no more and i dont want to be messed up with the LGS and cancel seeing how they ordered it for me and would like to get a gun he has in stock to leave with one. $300 is the range. i have a 9mm so i figure a 40. im leaning towards sigma cause atleast if something goes wrong with the gun they pay for shipping both ways its on there site. taurus doesn't say that and some say yes and no. at $60 to $80 for shipping the cost would not be cost effective for a $300 revolver. even ruger does not state covering shipping to and from on the site. so far s&w and springfield state it clearly. ruger sr40 looks good too but its about $400.Comment

I own a S&W 40ve and love it to death. If it were the same price as a block I would still buy my sigma YES I SAID IT. The trigger can be lightened significantly with the removal of 2 springs (it takes someone with hardly any gun knowledge and a youtube video about 20mins) and a good polishing. I have NEVER through thousands of rounds had a jam (and I run tula, wolf etc) The ergonomics are great.Comment

After dry firing the Sigma a few times i ended up with a Ruger P95, a much better gun and if your shop has one i'd say get that as it is right at the same price point. I bought my P95 for $345 out the door, i know you said those two firearms are it, but i had to add my .02.thanks distro. sorry for such a short post but i have read enough post where if it is not a glock, sig, m&p ,xd or 450 or more gun everyone seems to have to say something even by asking not to say something people cant help themselves. its ok. i know they just want to help more. but just to let you know i have the xd. pretty much i have the taurus on layaway and dont think i want it no more and i dont want to be messed up with the LGS and cancel seeing how they ordered it for me and would like to get a gun he has in stock to leave with one. $300 is the range. i have a 9mm so i figure a 40. im leaning towards sigma cause atleast if something goes wrong with the gun they pay for shipping both ways its on there site. taurus doesn't say that and some say yes and no. at $60 to $80 for shipping the cost would not be cost effective for a $300 revolver. even ruger does not state covering shipping to and from on the site. so far s&w and springfield state it clearly. ruger sr40 looks good too but its about $400.
Also as others have said if you're worried about the cost of the firearm stay away from 40sw, it cost a lot more to shoot in the long run.
*** for your OQ i'd say get the S&W.ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ
