    Sig Question

Can you simply drop a larger barrel in a sig sp2022 9mm? Like the .40 barrel for the sp 2022 40. Put 40 mag in and shoot?

No, you cannot. You need a new slide and recoil spring to accompany the new barrel and magazine.

      Next: Sig SP2022 9mm
From what I've read in these forums, if you start with the 40S&W first, then all you need to do is buy the 9mm barrel conversion. And... probably good idea in calif. to buy some 9mm magazines (although others have said 'fine' to use .40 mags to hold 9mm rounds).

Given the response above ^^^^^. your mileage may vary using "existing" 40 cal components for 9mm ammo --- in which case I would guess your specific chosen 9mm ammo might be sensitive to the simple, barrel-only swap?

Going from 9 to 40 shouldn't be done with only a barrel change. ??? Keep asking.

When going up, no - you can't just swap a barrel. The OD of the larger barrel makes this impossible among other things. When going down in caliber, yes you can swap the barrel and in some cases (Depends on the gun) you can use the same magazine. This is especially true with Sigs, can't speak for any other maker. I'm definitely one of the ones who preaches the use of 9mm in a Sig .40sw magazine. One thing you do need to understand about doing a conversion though, is that you can't just pop a different caliber factory barrel into the gun, it has to be a conversion barrel, due to variance in the OD of each caliber's barrel.

Since it looks like you plan to buy a SP2022, consider buying it in .40sw to make the conversion easier/cheaper.

Even if you get a conversion barrel to go from .40 to 9mm you will get a small number of failure to eject/failure to feed issues due to the fact that the .40 recoil spring is too heavy for 9mm and the .40 extractor is the wrong angle for a 9mm rim.

This is true with the Sig SP series and the P series...

Those conversion barrels work fine for the range, but you will see a 1/100 (in my expereance anyways) "issue" rate with them. As long as you are not using the gun as a self-defense tool, or taking any classes with it then 1 failure per 10-ish mags could be acceptable to you....

Now if you want to go from 9mm to .40 you need a new slide. The hole in the front of the 9mm slide is too small for the .40 barrel to fit into, and milling the 40 barrel thinner is not safe.
