1911 Training???

Greetings all,

I would like to know how much difficulty I would run into when I buy a Kimber Custom II. I have not fired one b4, but I would like to get into the 'pimp my ride' of the handgun world. There is a weapons instructor at Iron Sights in Oceanside that offers lesson in shotgun/rifle/handgun so as many as I can afford would help. What could I do to help myself in my quest to learn this classy and sexy weapon?

1911's are pretty simple to operate. Once you understand the grip safety and thumb safety, you should be good to go. Generally people shoot the 1911 with a thumb/thumbs on top of the thumb safety to prevent accidentally engaging it while trying to fire. Other than that, you are talking basic gun handling fundamentals and marksmanship training.

As far as gunsmithing classes, check out the gunsmithing school at Lassen Community College in Susanville.

You're right next to a Marine base. Get a Marine to show you the ropes -- or enlist! (I jest)
But you are in a town with a lot of old Gunny's who can strip a 1911 down to the frame without tools and do it blindfolded.

Do you already know how to draw from a holster wearing a cover garment? Get help the first time. Give me a PM if not. Get some snap caps and do a lot of dry practice.

I heard Hilton Yam was the onsite gunsmith and the only gun that he couldn't get running was a Kimber, which had feeding and extracting issues. I believe the 2 guns that Hilton didn't work on were Dan Wessons.

It's just a gun, if you can shoot a Glock, Sig, XD, Hi-Point, or S&W well, you'll be able to shoot a 1911 well. The problem is all the 1911s out there with "custom" parts installed by somebody other than a gunsmith, they're unreliable, but your basic factory 1911 is no great mystery.

No, they didnt. They needed "corrective work" to meet his standards at a pre-shooting inspection, including but not limited to such devastating failures as loose grip screws and to set extractor tension to his preference.

OP, The 1911 is not a hard pistol to master at all. If you ever come to L.A. I'd happily help you out. If you come up before you buy. We can use my 1911's.

9MM, I was also going to direct him to 10-8. I thought only Tim was the one to do the class here in Ca.
