Thinking about a 1911 in 9mm

What would you guys recommend for a budget of $1200 or below (gun only, not including DROS or other misc. fees)?

Oh and no need to stick to the handgun roster on this, just looking to hear opinions on any 1911 style 9mm pistol, and if possible will probably try to use SSE method to get the gun later.

i have a custom 1911 in 9mm and its absolutely brilliant...my favorite pistol without a doubt. a very close friend of mine has a stock SA 9mm 1911 that shoots wonderfully. Took about 200 rounds and since then its been very reliable and fun. Haven't tried the Kimber, heard some very positive reviews but also some not so positive. Have heard a lot of good with regard to the STI 9mm.

The 9mm 1911 platform is a current favorite of mine so I would encourage you to get one and enjoy.

I have a Colt 1991A1 in 9mm, it is absolutely my favorite pistol to shoot. I highly recommend 9mm 1911s. I bought mine to stick with the 1911 platform when I couldn't afford .45, but it ended up taking priority over my .45s anyway. They're great for teaching new shooters, great for practice, a lot of fun to shoot, blah blah blah. Of the factory guns currently being offered I think the Springfield that Bojack posted would be my choice, but the RIA is a great value if you're on a budget.

As I always say, there's a lot of value in the Springfield Loaded models at that particular price point. The Combat and Target models are both on the roster.

Get one you will not be disappointed with the Springfield 1911 9mm except maybe with the factory mags. Here's mine that I did some customizing on. It is strictly a range gun due to the 2 lbs 3oz trigger job that I tuned with the stock hammer/sear/disconnector and holding after so many dry and live fire. I suggest replacing the ILS and titanium firing pin. The factory barrel is accurate enough for USPSA work.

Wow thanks guys for all the recommendations! Looks like the 1911 9mm platform has been taking off for a while and I'm glad to see that. A few years back due to personal economic conditions I was not in a position to ever think about one of these but things have changed for the better so I'm trying to replenish my "stable", and also trying to consolidate my pistol calibers to just the 9mm and the .45ACP.

I have read quite a few positive reviews on STI 9mm 1911s and was browsing into that quite a bit. Springfield it seems has had its share of growing pains in the early years but seems it is getting better with this platform. I have seen the RIA offering but have not started looking into that yet, but I've always been a firm believer of "you get what you pay for" so am leaning more towards STI and offerings like that.

Budget accumulation is almost there... Taking delivery of my USO scope will set me back a bit but at least that'll give me some time to read more recommendations from you fine folks!

Funny, as i was just watching "top guns" and they had 3 S&W tested, including a 1911 pro series in 9mm along with an M&P.40 and 625. They spoke about how the 1911 had finally been mastered to handle the 9mm reliably. If you watch the show carefully, there's a scene where the 1911 jams (looks like a stove pipe jam). Classic.

I went the Kimber stainless target II route because I didn't want to deal with going sse. It's a sweet shooter and a great (accurate) range pistol, I just got the sights zeroed and at 25 yards it did it's part as long as I did mine. It has me thinking about giving up my Glocks (my go to war gun) and going the sse route for a Kimber Aegis [4 inch barrel/slide with a full size handle], a decent go to war alternative in my opinion (save the deminished firepower; max 10 rnds +1 v. 19+1).

So I'll ask the most obvious [imho] question: What is your intended use for the firearm?
