I just sent my Gold match II in to Kimber to get checkered.
Total cost was 200 bucks including shipping. I get it back on wendsday.

Springfield Armory has mastered the art of checkering. No one does it better. No one!

What difference would one see between the hand or machine checker?

I've heard that with hand checkering, they are able to offer more lines per inch.

I was told by a gunsmith that he couldn't checker my front strap on my Colt XSE because the frame was uneven in thickness and it might be too thin. He showed me the thin spots and I was amazed.

                        Something to keep in mind.

You also have the option to do it yourself and learn something new. Checkering files and guide are sold at Brownells. Good luck.

In my opinion, there's not much aesthetic difference between hand and machine checkering, but it also depends on who is doing the checkering. However, hand checkering should be slightly sharper than machine checkering, and with that said, I would probably reserve hand checkering for anything above 20LPI.

In either case, you want to make sure that whomever does the checkering trues the radius of the front strap. Otherwise, the checkering will obviously be uneven, and probably appear to be wavey.

With hand checkering, some Smith's will start out by machine, and finish by hand. One of the benefits in hand checkering is the ability to checker further up the strap compared to machine.

As always, with hand checkering, you may have small anomolies or slight imperfections. With machine checkering, assuming the machine operator knows what he or she is doing, your checkering is going to be perfectly uniform.

Machine checkering is nothing to balk at, and is quite complicated and time consuming.

Anybody got any recommendations for golfball or scaling? Besides Rogers, Gemini Customs, etc? It'd be nice if it was local, but doesn't have to be.
