The HSC statutes require training from one of the following:

    (j) Department Certified Instructor applicants shall have a certification to provide training from one of the following organizations as specified, or any entity found by the department to give comparable instruction in firearms safety, or the applicant shall have similar or equivalent training to that provided by the following, as determined by the department:
    (1) Department of Consumer Affairs, State of California-Firearm Training Instructor.
    (2) Director of Civilian Marksmanship, Instructor or Rangemaster.
    (3) Federal Government, Certified Rangemaster or Firearm Instructor.
    (4) Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Firearm Instructor Training Program or Rangemaster.
    (5) United States Military, Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) as marksmanship or firearms instructor. Assignment as Range Officer or Safety Officer are not sufficient.
    (6) National Rifle Association-Certified Instructor, Law Enforcement Instructor, Rangemaster, or Training Counselor.
    (7) Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), State of California-Firearm Instructor or Rangemaster.
    (8) Authorization from a State of California accredited school to teach a firearm training course.

I used my NRA Certified Instructor credential to get an HSC Instructor Cert. Check out the local NRA members councils and find someone doing an instructor training course. They are good to have anyway, and the more NRA instructors out there the better.

If you have one of the above mentioned schools, where do you get your certification from to become a HSC instructor?
sigpicIf you loan someone twenty dollars and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Or should I say, who do you have to get in touch with to receive your HSC certification?

If you don't have the required training already, the NRA pistol instructor course will qualify you and can be had pretty readily.

January 12 & 13 at the AKI Security Training Center we are having an RSO (Range Safety Officer) and Home Firearms Safety Instructor course (both NRA certified courses). You can look at our website at http://www.firearms-training.info if you would like to get more information. Please click on the Instructor training tab on the left.

Fill in a Form FD037 and mail it in with a copy of your training cert, and $14 (unless you already have a valid COE), and they will send you a certificate. There are all kinds of FAQ's on the DOJ website about the HSC program.

Thanks fairfaxjim. It looks like I will be a HSC instructor in 90 days or so.
