why do Glock 34/35 have cutouts on top of slide?

My 3rd gen has a plastic guide rod. I'm guessing it cools the barrel, balances weight, and what TKM said.

I would rather the slide be solid with no cut out. Nice place for small rocks and dirt to get into.

Usually slide cut outs is for faster recoil or cycle really light loads.

Since the G34 can be used as a competition gun, I would imagine its for really light loads.

They were never ported, the slide is cut to keep the weight, and cycle time, close to the G17/G22. It's the largest Glock that will fit the USPSA and IDPA box.

Debris? Glocks have such wide clearances sometimes I wonder how the gun doesn't fall apart. It makes for a reliable gun, though!
