How do I stay out of jail for my self built AR pistol =)

    Hi all,

Ive got myself my milled 80% TM lower receiver, parts kit, 0 round magazine, bullet button, and pistol buffer tube/7.5" upper ready to go.

I want to first make sure I can find documentation from ATF/DOJ/State agencies regarding the legality of my "pistol", so if I meet a LEO or perhaps scarier a BLM ranger, I can save myself bruised wrists and a ride in a plastic backseat.

So yea, Ive been digging thru gun laws and rulings, but its mind boggling. Any pointers or links on places to look?

I have all my reciepts, including my 80% lower, anodizing service, all parts, etc. I want to add some documents from government pages to this portfolio, so I have educational tools in hand if I ever run aacross an issue.

LAST QUESTION for now: What, if any, markings do i HAVE to engrave on my self built lower pistol?

    Thanks!

Contact TM for ATF documentation they have.

Markings you dont HAVE to engrave anything on your selfbuilt lowers if you don't intend to make it for sale. But we dont live in an ideal world where everyone potentially stopping you, understand the gun laws, so put AT LEAST a serial number and city state of manufacturer.

If you use the search function, you will find threads that cover this very same topic.

cool thanks...I also have heard that "shouldering" your ar pistol buffer tube can bring legal consequences. Any validity to that?

Jut out of curiosity, have any Calgunners reading this been hassled, questioned or arrested as a result of shooting your AR pistol?

I am interested in one but not sure if I want to have to become a target for law enforcement just by shooting my legal, compliant AR pistol. I feel with my rifles, the flow chart, Sacramento PD letter, etc. provide some measure of educational materials but for an AR pistol, I don't know if the corroborating evidence is as clear. I will be digging through the AR15 site to see what they have as far as DOJ and BATF letters/rulings.

I know that they are legal but I am debating if it is worth the potential hassle as a range toy? What think all of you?

Links to Any info in this topic would be greatly appreciated on this thread!

I recently finished my AR pistol from an 80% TM and am putting together a portfolio myself...

I know it is legal, I just want to be able to prove that it is...

In regards to having it locked in a container, that doesn't do you any good when LEO come down the firing line or BLM Ranger as your shooting.

I love my AR Pistol (so far, haven't fired it yet) so I say go with the build, but for harassments sake, have docs backing your stuff!

Thanks guys, those documents would be helpful in creating my peace of mind in owning and shooting one. I agree with Sgt. Breezy, not so worried about transport but hey, cops go to shooting ranges too. It is stupid that we have to justify our legal firearms because LEOs generally aren't as well versed in California's ridiculous maze of laws, but there you have it.

I would rather not get dragged to jail, even if I am right. I finally got to hold an AR Pistol yesterday and I think the buffer tube on my cheek works out better than it looks like it should. They are cool looking and look like a lot of fun, IF I have the portfolio of legal research and papers to support it. I would be buying it (SSE), not building it.

                      Thanks guys.

I have not had any problems with my AR Pistol, however make sure to always have
the OLL flowchart and know the Pistol related material, overall length, BB, etc. The last 4 times I took it out, the range masters had no issues, besides whether they wanted me on the pistol lanes or the rifle lane.

Good to know that I0rdr0ck. That's what I need to know about, I understand all of the long gun requirements, have the flowchart, but when it comes to an AR/AK pistol, am not sure about the requirements of length, etc.

I also have an Uzi carbine (Cali legal) with a fake suppressor so when I take that out to shoot anywhere, I would always let the rangemaster, front office, know, in case they look at me shooting and wonder what the heck I have.
