I have a SA ultra Compact V10, with ported bull barrel. It looks cool when fired cuz the flash is really bright. It is not anymore accurate than a none ported. Thats about it.

Pefectly legal but I doubt they offer any measurable benefit.

I have one on my GLOCK 29. I own two GLOCK 29s, one normal barrel and one ported barrel. I can't tell any difference when shooting them.

      Both together

100% CA legal, since they're not threaded on, but drilled into the barrel itself.

If you want to get a pre-made brake or compensator, then you need to have it permanently attached, so that you don't have a threaded barrel anymore.

If you want something threaded and easily removable, you need to ditch your detachable magazine or your semi-auto functionality.

If your pistol is already not semi, or has no detachable mag, then thread the whole damn thing for all it matters.

ports work better when there's more pressure and gas to actually DO something with.

I have a Taurus 85M with ported barrel. Under low light, the flash is quite bright. I do not have a standard barrel to compare it with.

I'd stay away from ported barrels for self defense. If you have to fire from a very close contact/retention position e.g. gun is out of the holster with your hand on the bottom of your ribs, the porting will blow gas and residue up towards your face.

So while ported aftermarket barrels are legal, I'd stay away from them and from factory ported barrels if the gun is intended for self-defense purposes.

The only benefit that I've heard of for a ported barrel is to reduce recoil/jump for race guns. Well I guess that could benefit anyone, but it seems to be most prevalent in race guns. Whether or not it actually makes a significant difference, I have no idea.. that's just what I've been told from race gun fanatics.

Unless you regularly swap shots at contact range it's a non issue. I'll take a few burns in defense of my own life.

Who's the tool that raised that as a problem in the first place?
