$800 is a bit high, they are usually priced $700-$750 around me, assuming they have a little wear and no box, tools or paperwork. If it has cokebottle grips then $800 is a steal. A picture and dash number would be helpful, as would the serial number.
Hammer push off is easy to see. Make sure it is unloaded. Cock the hammer all the way back, keeping your finger off the trigger use your thumb and gently push forward on the hammer. It should not move. Gradually increase the pressure on the hammer, you don't have to show off your manhood here just apply firm pressure.
If it falls without the trigger being pulled just walk away unless you want to send it to a smith. If the hammer falls that means someone botched a trigger job in the past.
