    Do aftermarket parts hurt re-sale?

I just aquired a colt 1911 in .38 super that i was thinking about selling. The frame is from 1974, the slide is an STI, and the barrel is a bar-sto. It has adjustable sights and 4 mags. What would something like this go for being that its not all original?
    Any info is apperciated

I don't know if it hurts it or helps. For me personally I don't like buying modified pistols I'd rather get a stock weapon and modify it the way I see fit. For example someone that sells a G17 with aftermarket NS extended slide stops ect most of the time they aren't the ones I would buy so IMO your market shrinks.

It's not a high-end pistol, but has nice parts. How does it shoot?

It might sell for a little under what a new Series 70 would sell for, provided the internals are ok and the bbl isn't shot out. Mag well is just an add-on, the grip safety isn't fitted very well, so $800 to a $1,000 wouldn't be out of line. But, keep in mind, a lot of little mods don't always add value. Don't be offended if you are offered less.

Who built it? If it was put together by a known 'smith, it might be worth a bit more. Maybe 800-1000 if it shoots well.

i dont know who built the pistol or even how it shoots. I plan on putting atleast 50 rounds through it before i sell it to make sure it fully functions.

I personally dont like guns that have been tinkered with..You just dont know if it was Hoag or Bubba. (Unless theres paperwork) I prefer to buy stock guns,if its been messed with, price must be real real good. Just my 2 cents.

I personally only buy pistols which are unmodified and stock.

In the realm of 1911's, since few parts simply drop-in, buyers do in fact care about which Smith fitted them, and even if the pistol has been resold several times, a good seller will always have the documentation.

In the case of a 1974 Colt .38 Super, which is an awesome pistol, I think the overall value is greatly diminished with an STI slide. Personally, I would not buy it, and I'd almost be inclined to call it sacrilege.

Franken gun. Parts gun. Bcuket - o - gun. Whatever you want to call it.

Not saying its a bad gun, but its not going to get the same price as a production gun.
Personally, Id refit it with a 9mm barrel and keep it for a shooter. It looks like a great pistol!

If you articulate that the mod's are improvements and they are improvements that anyone can benefit from I think it is a plus.

Who doesn't want a tuned aftermarket trigger, or better sights.

But don't expect to get the full value of the upgrade.

I don't think aftermarket parts hurt the value but you limit your market. The average joe just sees a 1911 and not the parts which add value. A contractor once told me a $300,000 house built with $2million worth of gold nails is still a $300,000 house.

One mans semi custom gun is anothers mans POS, But in your case I think that is a good looking gun and if it performs well and I was looking, I would buy it, $500-$600

When someone modifies their gun, that means the gun is made for THAT shooter. So I do not like buying guns that has been modified.

I wouldn't call that modified, I would call it pieced-together.

I like modified.....pieced together is a different story. I would probably expect it to sell for 600-800 (depending on how well it's fitted).
