    Broken Lock on Gun Safe?

Haven't been here for a while.. Actually, haven't gone shooting in years! Was planning to get back into it, so I decided to check the little DAC safe that I had my ammo and magazines in.. Its an "older" version of this one: http://dactec.com/index.php?page=sho...mart&Itemid=60

Years ago (probably 5 or so), the batteries in the electronic lock leaked.. I still had the tube key as backup.. Well, I just tried the tube key, and it just spun around and around.. The bolts didn't disengage..

Luckily, I didn't bolt the safe down, so I figured I have 2 options, 1) take it into a locksmith or 2) try to drill the lock out.. #2 is probably a lot cheaper, and was wondering if anyone has experience with this? Can I just drill it out and try to disengage the bolts? Or should I just bring it into the locksmith?

Bring a saw to the body of the safe since it has thinner steel. Since the electronics are gone, safe sounds like its ruined.

Thanks Stevie! Hmm.. I've never had to cut through steel before with a saw.. Let me do some research on what I need.. thanks!

Oh, and I agree the safe is no longer worth a repair..

Since you have ammunition in it do not use a power saw. Look up "hacksaw"

Thanks Frank! I was just checking the internet, and actually saw a guy cutting open one of those sentry fire safes with a circular saw (was thinking of that route).. Hacksaw might take some time... But then I'm in no real rush..

I haven't gone shooting in 5-6 years, and recently checked out ammo prices.. yikes!

          Thanks for your suggestion!

Wow, the hacksaw is doing the trick quite nicely.. Yes, it's taking a while, but it's a lot easier than I thought!

If its not worth repairing a 4’+ heavy duty Pry Bar will pop that door open in a heartbeat.

Just wedge the safe against a solid wall, get the tip between the door and let physics take care of the rest.

drilling the lock wont do anything since it is already spinning it obviously isnt engaging the lock so it is fubar.

destruction of the safe is the easiest solution.

Once you destroy it, get a manual lock.

So instead of cutting it all the way around, I just cut out a corner and removed the ammo box by box. I had 1500 rounds of ammo, 6 magazines, and an assortment of other things I forgot about.. Thanks for the help!
