    M1911A1 help with some markings

I have a few 1911 handed down to me and I'm not sure about the [39] stamped forward of the trigger and the stippling of the back and front of the grip. it looks much different then on my other 1911 45acp's.

    Thanks in advance.

Ithaca Gun Co 1911...stippling is a sign of later custom work?

Just a guess...Others here should be able to give you more info.

Yes, has custom work. Back in the 60's, the guys from the WWII era showed up at the range with their tricked out 1911's. Adjustable rear sight is also custom. I wouldn't be surprised to find it's been "throated" to fired 200gr lead SWC ammo for target. Likely has a match grade barrel also.

How about a couple of good pics of the other side of that beast?

Proof marks on the other side of the trigger guard? Any letters under the slide stop? Markings in the slide?

I'll strip it down and take a closer look. Pop's is no longer around to answer my questions, only his guns are left to speak for themselves.

From the looks of it the front sight was soldered on due the discoloration of the front of the slide.

Both sights were changed. That adjustable rear sight is non-mil.

From the side view, the barrel bushing looks either stainless steel or "in the white." Suggests a match barrel with a match bushing were fitted to the gun.

I don't know about that. I'll have to take a closer look at the front sight when I get home. I have another picture of the front sight just not one of the top view of it.

The sights are definitely not mil-spec nor the stipling. Someone has customized it. The "41" should be the last 2 digits of the serial number and would read "No. xxxxxxx41".

Did you block that out in the image or has it been removed on the gun?

Some of them look like pictures of Camp Perry bulls-eye pistols from the 60's that I've seen, especially the top pistol in the photo of three of them, the one with the patridge type front sight that is reminiscent of a pre-war Colt National Match front sight. What a neat collection your father had. I hope you'll keep them in the family.

photo shop'd it out. I know my dad did not do the work to the handle, so I was wondering if it was a custom effort by someone. The 39 stamped into the trigger guard is something I'm still lost about. His other 6 45's don't have a stamp at all at that location.

I'm going to try to make sure they all stay in the same condition if not better. I've shot every one of his guns, however I feel they should stay off the range for now.
