Help with .22 Purchase

Hey guy's n gals. I'm looking to get a .22 pistol and was wondering what your recommendations are. I wanted a SiG mosquito but with all the issues I've been reading about here and elsewhere, it's definitely out.

I knows Rugers are supposed to be pretty solid but what about others like Beretta's Neo, the Walther P22, or the S&W 22?

I believe the Neo is no longer on the list so you would have to find a used one for a PPT. The Ruger SR22 is supposed to eat anything and several here have reviewed it. I have one but haven't taken it to the Range yet, I can tell you it is a thing of beauty and fits my hand well.

Don't overlook the Ruger 22/45 or a Buckmark unless you just don't like that style of pistol. The 22/45 is very reliable and eats most ammo.

You know, it really depends on what you want it for. The SR22 looks very cool; but it's not a target gun; nor is the .22 rimfire a very good defensive round.

So, do you want tacti-cool or target?

I'm going over to the .22 rimfire for target as it is relatively inexpensive to shoot. And marksmanship does not require a big centerfire round.

The Ruger MK series pistol have been shooting targets for decades; but the quality of the new MKIII's -- especially the blue models is lacking. Most folks find they have to modify their Ruger MKIII's to get them right. Now, the Stainless Steel MKIIIs are more expensive; but have better fit and finish.

As another Calgunner suggested, the Browning Buckmark pistols are also very popular for target.

The S&W model 41 is an extremely nice target pistol -- expensive and now hard to find.

Then there are the ultra expensive Olympic type target pistols -- but they are for those who really intend to compete in sanctioned events.

What will it be used for?

I have a Ruger MK II, 5.5 bull barrel. I love it.

I've had it forever, put tens of thousands of rounds through it and it's never failed me. I can't think of any specifics but maybe after a really long range session I may get a couple of FTF due it being very dirty (and using crappy Remington golden turds or something).

I've used it for informal plinking, teaching folks to shoot and for a bullseye pistol league, all with great success. The pistol league success was relatively successful, but it was the shooter not the gun that didn't win the matches.

I wholelheartedly recommend the Ruger platform. I hear the MK III's are good, too. Sounds like you can mod them to remove the mag safety. Then you have the same platform but with a more convenient mag release.

Just one calgunner's opinion.

I personally love my Mark II. But you didn't state what you want the gun for? If it's just target practice, the Marks by Ruger are nice, heard great things about the browning. If you are thinking of getting a 1911 in the future (or already have one) the 22/45 by ruger is a perfect training gun for it.

I really like my Browning Buckmark. I have a few thousand rounds through it and have only had trouble with Remington ammo. Both the Blazer and the Winchester ammo have run great through it.

The Browning Buckmark is not the only good 22 out there, but it certainly is a quality gun.

If I had to do it again, SR22! BUT, I purchased a GSG 1911 and am happy with that as well. Not the quality of a Ruger, but it's a fun gun.

I would say to stick with one of those 2.

SR22, it's pretty much a service polymer pistol that shoots .22s. It has a safety, SA/DA and decocker.

MK III and 22/45 are more of target guns, super accurate, but ergos are lame.

As many have stated, you can't go wrong with any Ruger - SR22, Mk III, 22/45.

With that said, I could not be happier with my Buck Mark Camper. 100% reliable, very accurate, simple to maintain, and it has one of the most comfortable grips I've ever held.

I love my Rugers...

I had a MKI from 1969. MKII is nice also. MKIII is OK.

I think I would like to give the Buckmaster a try.
