I've heard that the new 9mm P229 frames (E2+) are the same as the .357/.40 frames. If so, could I shoot .357/.40 buy buying a new slide/barrel using the 9mm frame?

Yes, the 229 (along with many other models) frames are all identical between calibers. And yes with the appropriate conversion parts, your frame can be easily used. Don't forget new magazines to go with the upper section."If it wears out, replace it. If it breaks, upgrade." -Cranky Air Force Vet.

Yes, the new frames have magazine wells that are larger so that the .40/357 magazines will fit.
If you are willing to get the whole upper, as opposed to just a barrel, you should be able to convert your gun to use the larger cartridges...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment

I posted this a week ago in a different thread.... Looks like it might be relevant here also.
When they introduced the new long extractor on the 229 they also standardized the frames on the slightly wider .40/.357 frame and dropped the marginally thinner 9mm frame.
This means that in the new platform you can now interchange .40/.357 slides with 9mm ones whereas you could not before.
Older 9mm P229 frames will only match up with older 9mm slides.
Older .40/.357 frames and new (new meaning with the new long external extractor) 9mm P229 frames will match up with either older .40/.357 slides, new .40/.357 slides, or newer 9mm slides.
The change is small enough that the old 9mm magazines will work in the new wider frames (they may wobble a bit but won't fall out), but the new wider 9mm magazines won't fit into the old frames.Comment

The 229s with the long extractor have the new frame.
They have made Dark Elite's with both the short extractor and the long extractor. You'll have to look at the extractor on the specific gun in question to know.
New extractor (long thing on the slide next to the chamber)

Old extractor (short thing on the slide next to chamber):
