Angeles range ammo restrictions question

You're going to have to magnet it, some Wolf is magnet attracting, some not.

And the restriction is a good one, steel case and bi-metal jacketed ammunition creates HUGE sparks when it hits a rock. Next time I'm shooting at dusk in the desert I plan to have my video camera to record it.

If it says "Copper FMJ", it should be good to go. You can call and ask your vendor to check it for you to be sure.

If it says "bi-metal" or steel core, it will attract a magnet.

They never check handgun ammo.

Not sure how that changes what ammo is restricted

I think steel bullets at rifle velocities create a heck of a lot more sparks than at handgun velocities.

I, too, have only seen them check rifle rounds.

Wolf Military Classic 9mm is magnetic. It doesn't say "bi-metal jacket" on the box, but it is. I just bought two boxes and found out the hard way.

Is there any way you could check with the range to see what is acceptable and what is now? They should make some sort of list of acceptable ammo so people like yourselves don't have to go through this. After all, it is their rule. The least they can do is help you comply.

Angeles Range posts this on their website and its on the outside of the range office. From what I've read and experienced, its pretty safe to assume that no ranges in southern California will allow you to shoot steel core, steel jacket, or bi-metal jacket ammo. Its a real bummer when you have a Mosin, there's plenty of cheap milsurp ammo, and you can't shoot any of it.

I'm not sure why you want waste your time buying Wolf in 9mm (9x19mm) anyway. I'm guessing even if you are buying 1000rds packs incl shipping you're probably spending 16.5 cents a round anyway.

Go to Walmart and buy the Winchester White Box for $13 for 100. That's obviously 13 cents each (plus tax). At least you know the Winchester is going to be range safe, right?

Depending on your handgun, steel cased ammo may be hard on your extractor, leading to premature wear.

No list. Bi-metal jackets are a lead bullet with a steel jacket, and the steel has a copper wash to prevent corrosion, etc. B-metal is favored by some of the former Eastern Bloc countries, as it is cheaper than copper jacketed bullets. The exception to the Eastern Bloc rule is the former Yugoslavian countries and partially true with the Czech Republic.

In 7.62x39mm, all the Wolf, Golden Tiger, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, Barnaul is Bi-metal, apart from the Wolf in the yellow / black box which says copper FMJ or HP (which appears to be in short supply at the moment.

If you are buying factory new US manufactured ammo, then it is all range safe. Best thing to do if you're still unsure. Go to your local gun store, with a fridge magnet and test the ammo you wish to purchase.

They do check pistol ammo. I was shooting some swiss made RUAG/Ammotec/RWS new manufacture 9mm when a RO came by and said I couldn't shoot it. I swore they seemed to be copper FMJ ball till he mag checked it and sure enough he was right.

Yes, some ranges, ussually indoor ones, only allow brass cased ammo.
