Springfield Sub Compact vs. Essentials

I was at a Turners the other day, and was looking at the Springfield Sub Compact model. Down the display case was what looked like the same gun but at a cheaper price called the Essential. Both guns 3" and were identical. I asked the guy at the counter and he didn't know. Just told me one was $90 more.

Could someone please help educate me on the difference of the two?

No holster / mag loader/ mag pouch. They are junk anyways, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I think he means the holster/mag loader are junk. Go for the essential package, save the $90.

I should add, I am looking for a handgun for my chick to learn with. So I figured a 9mm sub compact with low recoil would be a good choice. Is there something else I could look into for her?

The essential kit does not include the holster, mag holder and the mag loader IIRC.
It just comes with the gun and 2 mags. IMO it's worth the savings.
Having said that IMO, the XD series have a higher bore axis and kicks more than other similar sized 9mm's and getting a smaller one would make that even worse.

I'd probably recommend a bigger/heavier gun and/or a gun with a lower bore axis like a glock, M&P, CZ perhaps. If it's for your woman, I'd recommend letting her handle various guns and see what feels good in her hands.

Get the basic set up, you wont use the extra stuff they throw in.

For your girl, remember the smaller and lighter the gun is, the more recoil it will have, but XD's arnt exactly light.

Lots of options out there as well as tons of opinnions, you can ask ten different guys here what is the best gunand get 15 different answers.

I got my XD9 when they were first release by Springfield. It was no non-sense, just the basic stuff. Then later on, they started out including the "free" items. They aren't really free because a price increase came along with it. Glad they are offering a less expensive option now.

Take the $90 and use it towards ammo, holster, and/or extra mags.

I just got the Xd9 Sc. I also have a full size XD40. Both great guns. Simple to use, reliable and simple to break down and clean. If you are in socal, go to Ammo bros. They will give you a better deal than turners.

+1 on getting the essential package.
With the $$ saved, get a Uplula magazine loader (about $20-$30), you and your woman's thumb's will be much happier.

XDSC9 is a great gun I love mine.

I would recommend a longer barrel gun, the ~4" barrel guns is a good compromise, for a longer sight radius.
The 5" barrels might be front heavier than liked for new shooters, new shooter will go low left on XD's anyways

Other than that, the 1911-9mm is the lowest recoil, funnest gun I have

I would recommend a Ruger sp 101 or a 3 inch S@W 60-15.

If she's new to shooting, go for a 1911 in 9mm.

- EXCELLENT trigger
- Long sight radius
- Not one, but two safeties
- Narrow frame for proper grip. If she has small hands you could add slim grips.
