High Round Counts

I was just curious as to what some of the members on here, who have years of shooting experience over me, have in terms in round count in some of their most used handguns. Specifically, I would like to know about round counts before any major parts had to be replaced, but go ahead and share anything if you want.

I am going to take a theoretical guess and say that a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 that is fed a steady diet of light .38s has high potential.

It would also be nice to see what firearms have stood the test of time and have survived being passed down a family of avid shooters.

For pistols, your probably going to find alot of action pistol sports (IDPA, IPSC, USPSA, etc) shooters with high round counts. I put 100k rounds through my Glock 17 in 4 years of shooting IDPA and various training classes. Replaced the recoil spring and magazine springs, thats it.

There are some range rental Glock 17's that have close to a million rounds on them and are on the original frame and slide. Just about any modern quality pistol will outlast what any recreational shooter can dish out. Round count on used firearms means nothing, as long as the firearm was maintained properly.

$10 for a box of 50 rounds in 9mm, thats a very low cost.

1,000,000/50=20,000

$10x20,000= $200,000 in ammo. You could buy almost 365 Glocks at $550 each for that price.

One Glock every day for a year.

What do you mean by "major parts"? Also, what types of usage are you looking for?

I know some competition shooters who usually put at most 30k through a practice barrel and much less through a competition one in order to keep maximum accuracy.

They then sell those barrels to shooting ranges that shoot another 150-300k rounds through them before they start to become unsafe.

On the other hand, some used cop guns on the market have shot out barrels after only about 50k rounds due to a constant diet of +p+ rounds and worn finishes from being banged around in a holster daily for a few years.

As far as frames, I've never heard of a steel frame wearing out from too much shooting. Examples of AL alloy frames can be found online with 100k+ rounds through them with the origional finish intact, and glocks shooting low powered reloads can last indefinately.

I'm not that old of a shooter and the highest round handgun I've got is my Sig 226 which is at about 4k. I've got to replace a few springs at or aound 6k but I would not consider those "major" parts...

My G19 has close to 7k through it in the past 4.5 years. Haven't replaced a thing and IMO its just getting broken in.

Just acquired a GP100 6" and plan to put some serious rounds through that baby over the next 40 years.

I have around 37,000 through my Beretta 92fs purchased in 1991. Only replaced the springs periodically and the locking block 2 years ago because I wanted to not because it broke.

I normally run 115 gr factory ammo and have only used +p on a rare occasion.

The gun runs just as well as the day it was new.

My 1st gun was a S&W 686. For almost a year it was the only gun I owned and I went shooting 3-4 times a month. It has well over 7k rounds through it in the 13 years I've owned it. I've never had to replace anything, but there is a screw under the grip that tensions the hammer spring, I've had to tighten it down a few times.

I had a 10/22 barrel you could drop a pulled .22 bullet all the way down without it touching the sides, full on smooth bore. That was a clear case of abuse and neglect and it was deliberate and it took nearly half a million rounds to make it happen.

I have melted the guide rod on a glock. Shot the barrel out of a few rifles. I think the only real serious parts issues were worn out and busted plastic parts on a Mossberg 5500. In fact, it's always the parts that are made of plastic and pot metal that break, so if you want a gun to last forever, find one that's made of machined parts, no MIM, no plastic, no pot metal, no castings. Just pure machined forgings. I think they stopped making those as everyday guns back about 30 years ago.

The Ruger 357 shooting light load 38.s will probably never wear out it's barrel.

Over the course of the decades an odd part may break but maybe not as Rugers revolvers are over built guns.

1) Had a 2nd gen Glock 17 crack a slide at about 35,000 rounds.
2) Had a Colt 1911 frame that broke thru the rails at about 11,000 rounds
3) CZ frame that broke thru the pad where the slide stop pin went thru several times
in about 12,000 rounds
4) Broke the lower lugs off the barrel on a Springfield 1911 at about 7000 rounds
5) Broke the lower lug off the barrel of a EAA Witness several times
6) Broke the magazine tube off of a Reminton 1100 at about 6000 rounds

There's more but this is a start ...

I have 8000+ rounds through my springfield xd 40 without changing anything and no problems.
