AR pistol owners

So over the weekend I was able to try out another calgun members ar15 pistol. It was freaking sweet! Using the buffer tube on my shoulder was a much easier way to shoot than out in front of me. I forgot your calguns name but thanks so much!(we were over at the las altos gun club) The most entertaining pistol I've shot for a long time. Now that I wont be getting an SBR in CA, this is the closest thing I can get to it and stay legal.

So heres my question to you AR pistol owners, does the "novelty" factor wear off? I mean its not exactly the most practical of firearms...
And how do you guys like your AR pistols now that you have had them for a while? Would you recommend one for someone else? your opinions/thoughts on AR15 pistols. I'm more of looking for people that already own/owned AR pistols not so much just everyone's thoughts on their buddy's they shot once.

This being said I don't own an ar15 rifle already.

i love my ar pistol. i have both a 7.5 inch upper and a 10.5 inch upper. I would have to say I like the 10.5 better. It gives the 5.56 round more velocity for better ballistics. I don't get people calling it a novelty gun. It does everything any of my other carbine ARs can do (except being built as a featureless). It is light as a feature and accurate out to 300 yards and beyond.

Novelty wore out for me, sold it. Had a 7.5 inch upper. Besides pissing off shooters next to me with concussion, it was still handful to shoot behind it. If it were under 500, buy it, but not as your first AR type weapon. For me an AR pistol was close to an sbr in this state. A silencer would help out but that's a no no in this state.
I do have a AR rifle now that I find more fun to shoot.

vta- That was one of the things I noticed it seemed pretty accurate, albeit my first time shooting it, at 50 yards standing I was getting about an 8-10" group. I was impressed with the accuracy using flip up sights and the rear sight being so close to my face.

jchen76- Out of curiosity, why do you say not as my first ar type? I am fairly familiar with ARs.

If you've got the ar pistol bug, then by all means get one. If I were to do it all again, I'd probably do it in fn 5.7 caliber which is good balance of recoil and blast management. Also for out of state can't beat 50 round rebuild kits.

I love my AR pistol, i have 3 other ARs though. My first was a 14.5 inch pinned Carbine.
The pistol i bought last.

Anecdotaly, i actual pack the AR pistol when i go to my gold claim. I feel the mobility
and range of engagement is good for the mountainoues terrain where i dont have
400-500 yard draws. I leave my carbine and optics at home. I run it with flip up sights, and a Magpul Angled Fore Grip (which per letter from ATF is OK). Albeit, when i go to the range i usually bring the rifle and Accupoint 1x4, it is more a paper puncher.

Oservations from 2 years of use:

I have not found it to be uncomfortable once you work out your style, two different shooting methods have worked well for me on 100-300 yard targets. I utilize a cheek weld type position primarily, I have also found success with sling based shooting, tighten up the sling and push out with the pistol.

And l0rdr0ck, so you don't actually take your AR pistol to the range that much?
I will primarily be at the range because I don't have access to close by land...

I really like my Ar pistol and I still try to take it out as often as possible.

I put the buffer tube against my cheek and blast away, it is deadly accurate and to me has about as much recoil as a squirt gun.

If you shot it and liked it you should get one.

While I have Troy flip-up sights on mine, it's a bit of a pain to actually use those sights, especially for 25 yards or less. I added a laser (under the barrel) to mine so I can red-dot the target at closer range. Pretty effective and very accurate with that setup.

I was bummed when the SD Sheriff's CCW guys wouldn't let me put that on my permit. I mean, when I'm out in the desert, I still need a permit if I keep that as my truck gun, right?

I use the small aperture on the rear sight since I am using it with the charging handle to the nose. I find that a 25 yard zero on the pistol is perfect for this type of firearm. It will shoot a little high at 100 but dead on at 300 yards which my AR pistol can smack torso-sized steel plates all day at that range with iron sights.

And madmax, is that a 7.5" barrel? The pics are killing me right now, I want one bad enough already!

Yep it is a 7.5 inch barrel, I like the shorter length cause it feels more like a pistol to me at that length.

If you ever go out to chabot (bay area) I am out there most fridays if you want to shoot it.

Chabot is my favorite range, actually. Im there all the time (well usually once or twice a month)

I have the Franklin 11.5 inch barrel with the VFG.. with the buffer tube on my cheek it's very easy to shoot (thanks to the VFG).. fun gun and very accurate.. my pretend SBR. lol

I enjoyed shooting mine in 9mm. Recoil was nothing. I went 9mm so i could use at my local indoor range. Primary Arms micro dot and very accurate. I have since sold the upper and the rest of the 9mm parts. I am thinking about getting another upper in 10.5". The novelty did wear off and they are not something I would shoot all the time.

Just get it, cause you can always sell or trade someone for something else down the road!
