Travelling to California. Question regarding "large capacity" mag

    Hello all,

New member here and have heard this is the place for all the answers regarding California gun laws. I tried searching online for the answer for this but it seems rather unclear for travelers from another state. I am driving down to California in the next couple of weeks and am contemplating taking along my Beretta PX4 9mm. However, since I live in Oregon, we have no "large capacity" magazine law and can have whatever size we like. I have the stock 17 round magazines and am not really wanting to have to go out and order a 10 round magazine just drive to California with my handgun. I read the recent thread, Magazine: all the answers and it didn't really seem to apply to me since I am not a resident in California.

Am I going to have to get a 10 round magazine?

Yes. Or convert one of yours to a 10-round magazine. The laws still apply to visitors. Sorry you have to go through this.

      Yes,

And it also has to be in a locked container in your vehicle. Ammo can be in the same container, but the pistol has to be unloaded.

I think you need to get a 10 rounder. Otherwise, you are importing those 17 round magazines and you are not an FFL (of whatever class, I dunno).

The law is written such that it's hard for people in CA to get a hold of 10+ magazines, it would be a pretty big loophole if visitors could show up with their 10+ mags and oops, "Oops, I accidentally left it at Joe's place, well that's OK, Joe can just mail me $20 later".

Just like, if you came to California and stabbed a guy, you can't say "Yeah, well CA law doesn't apply to me because I'm not a resident of CA".

The way I read the first post here http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?p=5667174 your can't visit the state together with your "high capacity " mags as that counts as "importing."

The laws in CA apply to anyone in CA. Just like the laws in OR apply to anybody in OR regardless of state of residency.

You can disassemble it before you crossing the border and leave it in pieces while in the state. It renders the gun more or less useless, but it will allow you to travel through California legally. When you get to any of the neighboring states you can reassemble.

Maybe buy a couple so that when you do make trips to California you will be good to go. Not sure how often you come down, and remember to have it in a locked container unloaded.

Seem stupid that us Californians can own and use our pre-ban Hi-cap mags and legaly buy rebuild kits, but someone coming from a free state cant even travel with one. Seems wrong!

Much of what the Californian government does is wrong. Just a wrong-minded group of people running things. Sociopaths, etc...

It's California...don't expect the gun laws to make any sense.

                          Silver lining however?

If you have to purchase a couple of 10-rd mags (for your visit), you could always SELL THEM here on Calguns, once you get home (if you have no need for them).

There is a market for them here...

SMART MOVE, checking in here prior to your visit. Not enough people do that.

I believe if you owned those mags and had them in the state anytime before the ban, they are legal to use.

I thought if you left and then came back it would still be considered importing. I'm not 100% sure about that but don't want the OP to get in trouble.
