I've seen many super souled up 1911 race guns. Are there any race guns that are not based on the 1911? I think Springfield makes a racy xd. Any Glock racers? Any other base guns?

The CZ Tactical Sport is a fantastic race gun for around $1000 in Limited configuration. It's a fantastic gun for the money but the Czech Mate is too expensive for what you get. They run almost $3500 in open configuration which is more than an STI GM. STI makes an awesome open pistol called the Steelmaster in 9mm at around $2500. Glock makes the 34 (9mm) and 35 (40 S&W), The XDM full size makes a good Limited or Production gun. Sig has an awesome Limited gun which is the X-5 and X-6. They're all single action and fairly pricey. For the money though, I'd go for the CZ tactical sport. You could use it in LImited or production and they do have it in .40 S&W which will keep you out of the minor categories.
I guess it depends on which level you'll be competing. Are you going to do open class with optics, magwells, compensators, etc or Limited, or Production? There's a fellow on Calguns right now that has a nice Tripp Research open 38 super for sale under $2400. It could be a good deal depending on the condition. Don't know the round count though. Most open guns that sell used have many thousands of rounds through them and rebuilding a well used open gun can cost several thousand dollars.
Just be sure, before you buy, to take the gun apart completely. Remove the grips, etc. and look closely at every spring and part. If you see visible wear, uneven springs, lots of dirt, etc, then don't even consider the purchase. You're almost always better off buying a new gun when it comes to competition firearms. That's unless you know how to gauge the quality, previous use, etc. You can also take any gun you're ready to purchase to a qualified gunsmith and have them look it over for you. It's worth the extra $50 to have them take it apart and check it out for you. Better than wasting $2500 on a gun you have to rebuild for another $2500.Last edited by Michaeln; 02-02-2012, 5:02 PM.Comment

.
Dont forget that the CZ includes 2 extra fitted barrels, and a few slide stops. Not saying it makes up for it, but it brings it in a bit more balanced.Sandstorm Custom Rifle Slings : Custom Paracord slings

Man, that thing is so heavy and accurate, you barely feel the recoil.Молон Лабе

Well I won't be into a full open gun for a while! I just picked up a cz sp-01 with some nice tweaks for production division. I have to reinstall the firing pin block first though.==================

Yeah...a "race gun"...built for speed, usually pushing the limits of the design, who cares how many times we might have to rebuild it.
Not saying they are junk or anything like that, but the buyers usually shoot them a lot.
