    Gifting a gun

I know a nice older lady whose son past away last year.

Long story short he had accumulated quite a few hand guns, and a few long guns. Most of the guns have been sold to the gun shop.

She wants to gift me a handgun (I have yet to even see it yet), but is adamant about following the law in have it transfer of registration - obviously she doesn't want this to fall back on her and I don't blame her.

I have yet to get my HSA (working on it).

She's not sure if the gun ever registered since she can't find the original paperwork. Is this a matter of the $19 DOJ fee or do I have to do something else?

You have to get your HSC, and you and she need to drive to the gun store and get it transferred.

No original paperwork is needed, wanted or cared about. No previous "registration" is needed or worried about. All both of you have to do is go to a FFL and do a $35 PPT. You will have to also get a HSC and have 2 proofs of California residency. Depending on the FFL, you might have to buy a gun lock. Some will give you one and some will charge way too much for one.

Right. The nice lady needs to do a PPT to you at a gun store; you need the HSC to receive the gun.

Prior registration of the gun does not matter; it need not be on the Roster.

And good for her for wanting to do it right, and good for you for asking!

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

If I were you, I'd get the paperwork together, drive this nice lady to your favorite gun shop for the transfer, then take her to lunch.

Where are you located? We can recommend gun shops in your area that don't treat you like a criminal or second class citizen because you are doing a PPT.
