In my limited experience, they work better than anything else near that price point. Not the most aesthetic guns, but if that's your budget it shouldn't let you down. I'd personally save up for a used Glock.

no my first is a xd .45 i am looking to get one for my daughter to take out with me it will be her first gun well mine but hers to use at the range i was looking at the xd 9mm loved it but a little high for her price range

yeah, I'm a fan boy, whatever. SP2022 in 9mm, you can find a used for for $400, and new for $425-$475. Good gun, my female friends love it for some reason.

I have the 380. It was cheap, is kind of ugly and the magazines took some tweaking to get them running reliably. But it eats whatever type/brand of ammo I feed it and after the mag adjustments I have had no problem. It's not the best gun I own but it sure is a good reliable gun and very inexpensive.
If you're buying it for your daughter my only concern would be that they are a bit blocky/fat and may not fit her hand too well. But, for the dough, you wont find a better gun.

I got one for my wife in .380 complete with a pink grip. Its ok but it has some issues with feeding sometimes, and it wont always cycle completely... the slide gets stuck just a smidge back from fully closed and has to be *helped to close fully. I've tried cleaning and lubes and ammo changes but its just always like that. Aside from that its a good little knockaround gun that didnt cost much.

Hammer bite? What hammer, the C9 is striker fired. Do you mean slide bite? I do agree, the slide does come pretty close to the web of your hand if you have a high grip. As for the pistol itself, I find it very accurate and quite reliable. The trigger sucks, it tends to pinch my finger a little bit when firing. It's heavy and ugly but that's part of it's charm. The magazines can be a little finiky when new and may need some adjustment to the feed lips. Also loading them up and letting them sit for a week or so seems to help break in the spring.

Owned one, good for a girl, nearly no recoil. Not a bad trigger on the one I had, better than the odd triggers on Glock/SR9, Not as good as the SA trigger on nearly any DA/SA pistola.

Plastic rear sight will wear right off eventually, go to the HiPoint firearms forums and look for the billet rear for $35.00

Definitely do mag feed lip adjustments. Just check them right out of the box, mine were horrible, adjusted them and had no problems with 8 or 10 round mags. I guess it's fair to say I miss that gun

You might also look at a Ruger LC9 - It falls between the Hi point and XD in price, and is very slim.

i find that girls like the "look" of small guns because they think they're cute

but they shoot bigger guns better because they have less recoil.

take case in point my mother had a much easier time shooting my P89 9mm than my dad's S&W 637 snubby .38.....

Its a great gun, its reliable and acurate enough. Built like a tank so you could beat the crap out of it, if you manage to break it theres a no questions asked lifetime warranty

Make sure she's able to "rock solid" grip it. Since it's a fixed barrel, it needs to remain solidly in the grip to cycle correctly. Most feeding issues with ANY fixed barrel (Walther PPK/S .380 and HiPoint 9mm in my case) were caused by weak grips. Here is the best review I've found on the C9.
