    USP 45 Tacticle

    Hello all;
I have been trying to figure out a way to obtain a replacement barrel without the threads. As far as I can tell, HK does not make an unthreaded factory version. (The pistol remaines disassembled..) But it remains as one of my favorite handguns, and I would really like to shoot it again!!
The only alternative that I have found so far is the Jarvis match barrel.

    C
Does anyone have any experience with or know of any other way to make a HK USP 45 tacticle CA compliant? Thank you for your help!

I'm sure it needs to be welded on...so bad decision...i'd buy another factory threaded barrel, and have the threads removed. Keep the original barrel with threads, as, the gun itself is more valuable, if you decide to sell it later on, with matching serial numbers.

(Also, if you weld on the thread protector on the barrel, not sure if you'll be able to strip it down...thread protector may have too large a diameter to get through the slide.)

OR get the non-threaded Jarvis barrel and enjoy...although i've heard good things about Jarvis, i cannot comment due to inexperience with the product.

You need to get a replacement circumcised barrel. It has to be permanent. If you put on the thread protector, it either won't be CA compliant because it can be removed, or you won't be able to remove the barrel to clean it.

Thank you for the helpful input!! I will proceed with the Jarvis so that there is no way it can be mistaken as a threaded barrel. I think that it is the safest way to proceed.
Thank you for the help and confirmation that this will be the way to go!

Ah yes, how to make a USP tactical legal in the Republik of Kalifornia. I was in a similar pickle a few years ago.

I just purchased a standard factory USP .45 barrel. It took forever on backorder from Midway, but it finally came in. In the interim I purchased an EFK Fire Dragon ported barrel that proved to be a spectacular waste of $200+ (I strongly suggest you avoid this brand). Jarvis are good barrels.

When I get around to it, I'm going to have a grove lathed into my HK barrel to fit the O-ring just so I can be tacticool.

Your other options would be to purchase a new threaded barrel and have someone turn the threads down and refinish it. This is no doubt the most expensive option, but the money men pay for extra length is sometimes worth it.

If you go the thread protector route, you have to make it permanent! There was a thread a while ago that discussed just what that meant. There may be some precedent that simply epoxying the thread protector in would suffice, but many thought that would be a gray area and that it should be at least silver soldered on. This would prevent you from being able to completely disassemble the firearm and may affect the collector value if that is a concern to you.

i was/am in same boat as you. jarvis replacement barrel has worked great for me for at least a couple thousand rounds.

i also keep a printout of an article citing the legality of continuing to keep the threaded barrel (no constructive possession of AW in this case). It's folded up and right next to the original barrel. That way, if questioned by LEO, I can refer to the article and hopefully avoid escalation beyond nice talk.

As far as modifying or removing the threads, how about this: Build up silver solder in/over the groves and then turn down the OD on a lathe to the OD of the threads or just barely bigger. This way there's no thread showing, but if the owner moved or sold the gun out of state, a die or torch would easily strip the solder away from the steel. Since the OD doesn't change, disassembly is no problem.

I keep looking at that Jarvis barrel for my USP 45, but can't convince myself that the slightly longer barrel justifies the $200+ cost.

A match trigger would probably be a more productive use of $$.

Jarvis barrel is worth the $200+ cost if you don't want to permanently alter the original threaded factory barrel. It fits tight (I had mine fitted), feeds as reliably and as accurate as the factory barrel. It's truely match grade.

I would just get a new barrel. Nothing else seems that practicle.
