Realistic time frame for Colt work -??

Anyone send Colt a handgun recently (last few months) for any work? If so, what kind of time frame were you quoted by Colt and what was the actual time?

Called Colt this morning and they quoted 6-7 months (months, not weeks). Just wondering how realistic that time frame is based on what folks are actually experiencing.

I called them about a replacement part of a 1911 sight that came from their custom shop. It took several calls before I finally got a hold of someone who knew what I was talking about. They agreed to send me the part. It has been a month and I have just given up. I sent the slide to Dawson Precision and had hem put on the sights I liked. That only took a week.

So good luck with getting your gun back in any decent time frame.

Brutal. Makes the 10 day waiting period seem so...nominal.

I sent S&W a repair last year and had it back in my hands two weeks later. That's why I confirmed "months" vs. weeks on the phone with them. Wow.

I was just looking at sending in my XSE to Colt for about 1k worth of work, but from what you guys say it might be forever before I get it back.

Someday I'd like to buy a good quality premium brand 1911 pistol ($800 to $1200ish?) and its stuff like this that makes me reluctantly scratch Colt off the list (along with Kimber and their spotty CS). It looks like Springfield, Ruger and S&W are pretty much the only major 1911 builders out there that give a damn once the pistol is out the door.

This is for custom work. Not CS issues.

Repair work and custom work are not the same thing.

I wouldn't trust a shop that had a quick turn around time on custom work. It means they don't have many customers.....and that's for a reason.

That's is actually an excellent point and I really didn't think of it like that. To be fair, the S&W work was a repair and the Colt work would be custom.

I guess it's like a restaurant. An empty restaurant should serve you fast, but is the reason it's empty because of the menu/service not being so good? Great restaurants are always busy, you have to wait and the bill isn't cheap.

Time to reset my expectations and/or ask what time frames others are seeing for customer work from some of the bigger names besides Colt.

People love their Colt's! Me too, but I only have one

Local smiths not a option? Ehh...a good smith will have the same wait time

                          Colt time frame

I recently sent my 1 year old colt for some repair work (broken pin on ejector...pistol still functioned fine though) and the repair order paperwork quoted around 3-4 months. I had it back delivered to my doorstep in less than 2 weeks.

Custom work would take longer I suppose.

From what I have read and heard is that it isn't a quick turn around for their custom work but it is well worth the wait. If you go on the 1911forum.com and look up member BJT72(Brent), he works in the Colt Custom Shop and he can answer any questions you may have.
