1911 like controls in a 9mm double stack or possibly RIA Compact

I have been looking for a new gun and have determined I don't even know what I want. What I do like is the idea of a SAO with 1911 style safety (Ruger and Baretta can keep their goofy safety), but in a full capacity 9mm. I have had a CZ SP-01, and while it is the right idea, the safety was not too good, and the slide is so low profile, I just don't like it. I recently experienced a USP9 that meets my criteria.

So I am looking for other models that are (or have the ability to be operated as) Single Action 9mm. I am primarily looking for a mid-size compact (4") so Sig p238 and RIA 9mm 1911 don't really qualify.

edit~ There is a Compact sized RIA Tactical for sale at my LGS that caught my attention. Any thoughts about that?

USP or USP compact in 9, the USP has the same grip angle and controls of the 1911. I carry my USPc 45 in Condition One - Cocked and Locked!

p.s. I missed that you said the USP

I love the HK compact line, the full size USP/HK series are just ginormous. Plus I keep my left index finger on the trigger guard. The FS trigger guard is way too big.

I have the CZ-75 SA, the controls are very much like the 1911, but I find it way easier to thumb off the safety on the 1911. It feels like the CZ's safety is a bit far forward (for my thumbs anysay) to feel the exact same.

However, you said you didn't like the CZ.

Hmmm.......this is a tough one. It's tough to meet all the criteria. If you can eliminate one, or two, of the requirements you create a bunch of options.

The USP platform is probably your best bet at this point.

The EMP and Para pistols seem to be what I really like.

I didn't know the M&P 9 was available with a thumb safety ( I did know that the .45 is available)

I handled a High Power at the shop today. Pretty cool. It seems like something my Dad would buy, he likes old stuff.

The CZ I had met the qualification (which is why I liked it) but I couldn't get over the slide being so low profile. I am sure trigger work could have helped the trigger, and over time the safety might have loosened up, but the tiny serrations was the third strike so I had to sell it.

Maybe I just need to get a .45 and just plan to spend more money on ammo.

Your Dad is a wise man.

The HP is still arguably the best 9mm combat pistol available.

You can get a Detective kit for it with a Commander length slide and barrel. Trigger work is easy if you feel the need.

It fits most hands perfectly.

The SP01 and 75 SAO are really different feeling. The safety on the SAO is much easier to disengage, and the trigger is much better.


But if the slide is to small, not much you can do about that.

Being the obsessive buyer that I am, I went back in there to look at all "MY" guns. I hadn't seen it before, but over in the consignment section there was 3.5" RIA Tactical. WHOA that looked cool, so I checked it out. It belongs to one of the employees who went on to tell me about all of the work he had done to it. It certainly seemed higher quality that the other RIAs that I have handled in the past. Now, he had my attention. It includes 5 mags and a couple sets of grips. He is asking $550 for it which seems high considering RIA GIs are really inexpensive, but maybe its worth it considering the work he had done to it, and the general rarity of the compact size. What do you guys think? SHould I push the 9mm to the back burner again and pick up the RIA compact tactical?
