    Advise on XD

I'm ready to pick a SD up for competition. I'm trying to decide between these two models:

    XD Compact 5" in 45
    XD Tactical 5" in 9mm or 45

Anyone have experience running IDPA with any of those have pros and cons?

    Thanks in advance!

idk how IDPA works but the 9mm is going to be cheaper to shoot. i have a XD in all calipers that they make and they are all great but to shoot matches you might want the 5".

    ask this on XDtalk too.

The tactical will yield much lower times..assuming the 5" 'fits in the box'.

      I don't see a lot of ppl shooting XD's though. Glocks , 1911's or a few other 9mm guns.

I would check but I have heard that in IDPA xd's are put in a different class than glocks because they are single action. This puts them with 1911's which is a disadvantage. Mark

I've been wanting a 5" Compact XD45, but I didn't think they made it on the list....did I miss something?

Get the 5" tactical in 9 mm. Cheaper ammo. Only reason to shoot 45 is if you have bad eyes and can't see the holes and take extra shots.
XD is in the ESP class along with 1911's in 40 and 9mm, CZ's in single action & modified glocks. I have seen many more people shooting the XD's lately. Most top shooters at the Sac IDPA in ESP are not using 1911 style guns. XD and the S&W M&P, CZ fit most peoples hands better than the Glocks.
Glocks seem to be fading from favor as more manufactures are offering plastic fantastic. If Glock would only offer another grip angle! Love my 35 after grip reduction, but can't use it in IDPA only USPSA. If I could just get a CCF frame in Ca!

Buy both, I have a XD40&XD9 both service models love them both. I carried the XD40 for my last two years as a LEO and cannot say enough about the XD's. In fact I just ordered another, a XD45 Tactical from Wes at Ten Percent firearms in Taft. Another road trip...............

I'd also recommend checking out an M&P.

Personally I like the grip feel better than the XD's and with a little bit of work to them they can have a great trigger. I also find them to be softer recoiling. The XD's already shoot pretty soft but IMO the M&P's are softer.

The XD's are nice though. I just prefer the M&P a little more and suggest you check one out.

Checked on the measurement of the XD 5". It'll fit in the box for IDPA. SVRider is right...that model hasn't made the list.

I'll have to get a grip on one of those M&P to see how it feels. The glock, which seems to be pretty well proven, just doesn't feel right in my hands. I also took a look at that website XDtalk. Thanks for that info. Dammit...now I gotta read more.....LOL

                        Stockton,

All XD models are IDPA legal. I have used an XD9 Tactical for IDPA for the past three years. I can't imagine switching to another gun. I've shot 1911s, Glocks, and Berettas, and nothing fires as well, as fast, and as accurately as my XD.

Even had a nice bit of luck with it at the IDPA Nationals this year.

The XD is considered a "single-action" pistol, so it is placed in the Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) division. Glocks, on the other hand, are considered double-action, so they are in Stock Service Pistol (SSP).

If you are interested in the .45 model, then you can use it in ESP (where you are at a disadvantage due to the increased recoil), or you can use in Custom Defense Pistol (CDP) if you load to only 7+1. CDP is the class exclusively for .45ACP shooters.

There have been some people who've argued that the XD and Glock .45s won't be competitive in CDP, since they don't have the 1911's weight to dampen recoil. But the top three guys in CDP at the IDPA Nationals didn't bother to listen, since they took the top three places with an XD45 Tactical, Glock 21sf, and a S&W M&P45.

If you come by the Sacramento match on Sunday and track me down at the end of the match, I'll be happy to get a feel for the gun by firing mine. I'll both a gunsmith-customized model and a factory stock one.

                        Best,

                        Jim

The XD is one of the best platforms around for shooting IDPA. It fits most peoples hand's nicely, has a grip angle a little more user friendly then the Glock does, and the accuracy out of the box is excellent. The worst part of the XD is probably the trigger but with the proper parts and tuning the XD is capable of a much better trigger then the Glock will ever have. The mags are metal instead of plastic and will last pretty much forever, the mag release button is perfect for shooting right or left handed, and the sights are functional as delivered.

For competition use I strongly recommend the 5" Tactical models, the extra sight radis is very helpful on the longer shots. If you are going to shoot ESP get the 9mm, if you want to shoot CDP, then go with the 45. If you are just starting out get the 9mm. It is cheaper to shoot and will also be competitive in USPSA Production division.

+1 on what Gryff wrote. He knows of what he speaks.
                            Congrats on the Nationals.
                            See you Sunday Jim.
Nice shooting last month at Sac.
Maybe I can beat you by .28 of a second this month.

not too sure on idpa rules. but i shoot a xd9 service in USPSA production class and love it. however if i had to do it all over again, i'd probably go with a xd40 tactical that way i could still make major power factor in limited class if i wanted to change classes. but i'm not sure how IDPA does their scoring so take my advice with a grain of salt.
either way, they're great pistols out of the box, and can be tuned (trigger, etc.) to make for a really great pistol that'll hold you over til you get a custom 1911 built (at least that's my reasoning )
