    Never Saw it Coming, 13-3

Those few of you that know me know I am a revolver guy first and foremost. I started with a 6" 586 and a 6.5" 29-2 back in the early 80's and I've never looked back.

Not to say I don't appreciate semi auto, but I prefer a wheel gun.

So, I went with a friend to check out a revolver in the East Bay and while we were there, I was clued in to a S&W 66 2.5" at their other store. If I'd been thinking, I'd have asked the guy to call the shop and put a "SOLD" sign on it, but I didn't.

We take our time, have lunch and when I finally got back to the other shop, the 66 was G-O-N-E.

In the display case was what I thought was an old model 10, so I blew it off, but the salesman told me it was a 13 and I did a double take. Damn! Excellent condition, box and tools and a price made to move. Only problem is it is a square butt 4", not a round butt 3". Still, beggars can't be choosers and they aren't making these anymore, so I tossed out a lowball offer - within reason of course, not insulting.

They called the owner, he bit, I slapped down the loot.

So, Here I sit, paperwork completed, waiting for the 10 day and 30 day (loadofBS) things to expire before it comes home.

I called Mag-Na-Port this morning and spoke to Ken about a 3" barrel and rounding the butt. If he can find a barrel, I'll go for it. If he can not find a barrel, I am hesitant to cut the current one. This is an ideal roscoe to make into a CCW pocket rocket. What I might do is to keep it stock and one day trade or use it in a trade for what I really want - 3" round butt.

I realize California frowns on giving the unwashed masses a CCW, but I can dream and maybe one day they will and I'll be ready.

I already have a commander 1911 and a couple 3" N frames, but a fixed sight K frame magnum for carry is also a nice option.

    Here's the pics.

All that mung on the finish is 20 year old grease - it comes right off. The blue is deep, old school blue and all but the right tip of the barrel is perfect. I'll cold blue that small spot.

Very nice, for $450 I would have jumped on it too. Too bad about the 66, a 2.5" and 3" 66 are two of my must haves, although they are tough to find here (especially for a decent price). Congrats!

      Congrats.....Nice 1976 example of a great gun.

Please don't chop off the barrel or round butt the frame.

"What I might do is to keep it stock and one day trade or use it in a trade for what I really want - 3" round butt."

Follow your own advice. The 3" heavy barrel, round butt model 10, 13, 64 and 65's are out there. Abet, not many but keep looking!

      Good Luck.

$450 was what he was asking, my deal got me OTD for that... well... $458.

As to cutting it up, the more I think about it, the less appealing it sounds. Someone might one day wish to trade me a like condition 3" RB, so I am of a mind to keep this one cherry, shoot only midrange mags at most and keep it in the beautiful shape it is in.

        One caveat...

If I find a 3" barrel, I might do the swap, keep the original barrel and leave the grip alone. It can pack well like that.

That way the gun can always be returned to original.

I've got a 4" 586 and a 627-0 to shoot flame throwers, no need to push the K frame.

Very nice revolver, congrats. The 3 inch versions are out there, they pop up from time to time.

It's always a good idea to buy another Smith.

Well that's a heck of a deal then, not often you find a nice condition S&W for $450 OTD. I agree with the others about not chopping this one. There are 3" K frames out there that need homes, no need to cut this 4".

Great find. After I got tired of carrying my 6" model 28. I switched to a 4" model 13. It was a great gun wish I had kept it. But I traded it for a 2" model 36 for off duty. You will I am sure love the model 13.

Thanks! I am certain it is a good one.

I went by the golden rule of doing unto others and all that.

"so I tossed out a lowball offer - within reason of course, not insulting."

I got it OTD for what he was asking. I figured there was some wiggle room and it was the last to go - unwanted as it were compared to the others, and he was aware of that.

I didn't offer him a pocket full of lint and a roll of string.

People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.
