    cheap 1911s?

I'd like to learn to tinker with 1911s but I'd like to learn on a cheap one(preferably used.) What brands should I look at in the $300 range(new or used) that can be shipped into Kali? I figured I'd start with ones on the CA list so I'm not limited to local PPTs. That would be ideal, of course, to keep the costs down.

Again, I'm just looking for a workable test bed and not a match grade 1/2 MOA shooter.

I'm not quite ready to buy as I'm just starting the research phase which is why this is here and not in the "want to buy" forum.

    Thanks!!

      +1 on the High Standard.

I bought one when I got home from deployment, and it was $350 out the door with tax + DROS.

Put the hogue wrap around grips w/ finger grooves on it. A good starter 1911. I put about 2,000 rounds through it without a problem.

Sold it to a buddy of mine after people had been creeping through his back yard at night. He had wife and kids in the house and only an old .22 revolver for HD, so I let it go at $300. I still miss it.

Cool, I'll look into the High Standard. Are they on the CA Approved list?

          Yes.

DD's Ranch (vendor here on the site) has them for $349.95

DD's Ranch is the founder of the New York SAFE Act Legal AR-15. DD's Ranch is the one stop shop for your firearm and accessory needs.

Go check out the vendors section here, PM Dean about the 1911, you never know...might get a calguns discount.

            Excellent, thanks!!

I didn't see High Standard as an MFR on the roster list, what company makes it?

              High Standard does.

The logo is on the main page after selecting handguns ---> pistols.

on the right next to the HK logo.

              P.S.

Sorry for the hotlinking dean, feel free to remove/sever link

Hmmm, you must be looking at a different roster page than I am. Here's the one I'm using:

Hmm. I guess High Standard is a subsidary of another company.

All I can tell you is I bought one new from the store, and they have been sold all over CA for as long as I can remember.

Most FFLs and shop owners are keenly aware of the list and will not put something out in their case for sale that is not legal to sell in CA.

                    Make:Armscor Precision Model:High Standard 1911 A-1 / Steel Gun Type:Pistol Barrel Length:5" Caliber:.45 ACP Exp. Date:11/1/2008
High Standards are pretty good guns for the money. I also owned a RIA and really liked to shoot the gun I would shoot wolf out of the RIA and never had a problem.

                      Right on!
Once my gun budget recovers, I'll pick one up. It'll be nice having a cheap 1911 to take apart and mess with rather than trying to experiment with either of my nice ones.

High Standards are made by Armscor -- same company that makes Rock Island 1911's in the Phillipines. Original GI peep sights, lowered/flared ejection port., beveled magwell.

In fact, I just DROS'd one at Roger's Relics a little while ago Bought it before Thanksgiving from DD's Ranch during their sale.

Fit and finish is what you'd expect -- the mag it shipped with is crappy, but I have plenty of good 1911 mags lying around.
