What does SSE really do?

Hi there
I have been seeing a lot people getting an off roster gun convert to SSE. What does it really do? Changing the barrel to make it single shot? Isn't pistol already single shot? If I have my gun convert to sse, can I ask the original parts back?
I'm planing to get a XDM soon and seems like that's what I need to do in order to own it legally, so I just want to be more familiar with this procedure.

The SSE process allows you to purchase a non-roster gun. Once you possession, it is legal to use the original parts and put the pistol back to it's correct configuration. Of course the FFL will give you back the original parts and will take back the SS conversion parts.

To qualify as a SSE, the gun must meet a minimum overall length and be converted to fire only a single shot. That is why the barrel is changed to a ridiculously long one, and magazine catch removed/replaced with a dowel, to meet the minimum overall length and single shot status to qualify as a SSE pistol. Once you take possession of the firearm in a SSE state, you are legally allowed to modify the gun as you wish as long as it doesn't break any federal or state laws. Converting it back to its original form does not break those federal or state laws. The dealer will return the original parts to you, usually along with the SSE parts being returned back to said dealer. Hence, you can take possession of the gun on the 10th day, walk out of the store, and walk back in 2 seconds later saying "I'm not comfortable performing modifications on my gun, can you install these parts for me?" and walk back out with the pistol in its original configuration.

I also had some apprenhension, but it is a very straightforward process.

1) We place order for the SSE gun with the FFL
2) Once the gun arrives, we do the DROS as SSE gun (all legal)
3) 10day desperate wait
4) Take officialy delivery of SSE gun, walk out of the shop and walk back in
5) The FFL swaps original parts, on your request and you have the original gun back
6) Enjoy!

Not for me, they SSE'ed my gun when i came to pick it up, most shops dont have many kits to have sitting on guns waiting for you to pick it up. When i got there the kit went from one guy , to another , then to me.

Guns should remain in SSE form throughout the 10 day wait... shop should not be doing that.
