9mm vs. Black Bear...what would you choose?

Well, if you were going into black bear country for sure, within 24 hours, had no bear spray, had only one gun you could possibly bring which is 9mm, and had no idea what is the most effective ammunition against a black bear, what would you do?

Under those exact circumstances, what makes the question so silly?

Wouldn't you consider asking trusted friends on your favorite internet gun forum?

Bear spray, because if the bear is attacking you and you shoot it the bear will kill you before it dies from being shot.

There has only been 12 black bear attacks in california in the last 32 years according to the DFG website. Only half of these were serious, with no fatalities. Sounds like pretty good odds

I'd at least ask those who know bear habits and have ACTUALLY stalked the animal to respond.

Heading to Sequoia Nat'l Forest tomorrow and am going to bring my XD9 with 2 loaded magazines.

If for some reason I had to shoot a bear out of self defense....would you use hollow points or full metal jacket?

They don't use hollow points to stop cape buffalo. Big animals need big solid bullets. 20 rounds should work, just keep firing. The only bear that will attack you is a hungry/sick bear.

9mm vs. Black Bear...what would you choose?

I'd rather have the bear but you probably won't have enough time to get a custom holster for one.

I agree, 9mm would really not stop a 200+pound bear charging or in your tent! JUST GO GET 2 CANS OF THE 12-16OZ BEAR SPRAY. Spend the $50 or so and then keep that in your car or home after the HIKE....

Advice, don't leave that in the car, if you forget and it gets hot enough, it may leak.

Seriously though, I used to work with exotic animals and even the small female black bears are much stronger than humans. In your instance, I would wear small bells on my shoes and carry bear spray. If the spray doesn't work, hope the 9mm glock exploding scares it off! It's winter and hopefully the bears are hibernating.
