Caliber Choice, Great Article by Steve Reichart

Awesome stuff right here, Steve is the man.

    best line

"That way next time you’re on the range or in a gun shop and you see some guy toting a 1911 and spitting out nonsense like “back in Nam” “the .45 would lift a gook of his feet”, “knock-down power” you will instantly identity him as a buffoon."

Let’s do the math folks, a .45 is only 0.093 bigger than a .357, so you have an extra 0.0465” on either side to hit that critical CNS spot. THAT’S NOT MUCH AT ALL! So in order to get .002% more surface area and an extra 0.093” of diameter

But at the same time, How many times have you heard that somebody got hit 0.093 away from his heart and could have died if it would have been that much closer? I think this guy is being just a little biased. I am in no way shape or form a .45 guy but I guess its up to personal preference. I am a .40 guy and I shoot that better then a lower recoil 9mm. So what does this guys say? Because a .40 has more recoil I can't shoot it? One more thing to add is that he is talking about how many rounds you are loosing in a .45 as opposed to a 9mm. Lets all remember we live in california and 10 rounds is all we get regardless. What I'm trying to say is, When it comes down to it, Its all about your personal preference.

And one thing I just caught. Did this guy say at the end that if you can't find a 9mm, Then a .22 is better then nothing? Which is true but is he saying that opposed to a .45? The more and more I try to read it. The more and more biased I believe him to be. And I'm a little hurt by the fact that he didn't mention my dear and beloved .40. The size and velocity combination IN MY OPINION makes it superior.

I can def see a slight bit of bias there, however, I think this article is an answer to the question, what do you carry and why? So he broke it down as to why he personally carries 9mm instead of .45... there is much more of a 9 vs 45 debate going so I assume he broke the 2 most popular rounds down.

True if you count out expanding defensive ammo, then the difference is much bigger.

Well the FBI thinks the .45 is the perfect balance of power and recoil. FWIW

Good info, something to think about. I might actually invest in more 9mm but I still like my .45s better!!!

Their standard caliber for field agents is .40. I dont go by special teams when I make a blanket statement about an entire agency : )

carry the smallest gun capable of carrying the most of the most powerful caliber you can control

                            i'd carry a 9mm but shoot a 45acp just as well in a fullsize 5"

                              Personal Preference.

You can kill a person with a spoon if you tried hard enough.

Point being any gun can kill. No need to overthink the issue.

Shoot what fits you and what you've trained with/most comfortable with.
"Then there are sheepdogs. The sheepdogs are the bastions of safety. The sheepdog lives solely to protect the flock and confront the wolf. They live for the opportunity to be called to duty to protect the innocent. The sheepdog has fangs and the propensity for violence but hopes that he will not have to resort to it. However, he lives for that day when he will be able to use his warrior skills and mindset to keep the wolf from harming the sheep."
