Dumb question about 1911 grips

Go ahead and laugh, but I don't know the difference between Government and Officer grip sizes. I figure that one is for full size, and the other is for compacts, but have no idea which is which.

Maybe officers get the full size because they are more important, or they get could get the compacts because they don't like carrying heavy things.

Could someone please explain.
