Bullet setback: chambering without a mag.

I'm glad that I learned about bullet setback while back, but I was curious, does the bullet setback still occur if you put the round in the chamber manually and release the slide without the mag?

I believe bullet setback only occurs when the bullet rides up the feed ramp from the mag. I dont think it would occur if you just drop a bullet in the chamber manually.

Yeah, not good to do on a 1911, even a robust modern gun like the Sig 1911. Puts more wear than you need on the extractor.

Also not good to slam the slide shut on an empty chamber. Won't turn your gun to dust but is not good for the trigger sear and can screw up a nice trigger if done enough. Also logic tells me I don't need to put more metal wear on a gun than need be.

Point one, agreed. Bad idea to barney load a round through the extraction port. You will eventually end up with a chipped or broken extractor. I've seen it happen.

No, but you're gonna be putting a lot of wear on your extractor. They're not designed to snap over the rim of the cartridge.

Better to rotate your chambered rounds so the same one isn't getting slammed around all the time.

Dont do that to your extractor panda. Just load in the magazine and rack the slide like its meant to.

The theory I understand is that when the slide returns to battery during firing, it is somewhat slowed down during the stripping and chambering of the next round.
It's best not to make a habit of slamming the slide home on an empty chamber.
