Colt or Les Baer

I have a dilemma either to go with Colt 70 series and modify it or get a Les Baer TRS and be done with it? Will I be able to achieve the same level of performance with the Colt at the same level of investment as with Les Baer (around 2K I'd assume)?

Go with the LB, hands down. The Colt w/n have the slide to frame fit of the LB. You'll spend more money, and probably still get less if you try to customize the Colt. Unless you can do professional upgrades yourself, it's going to be hard to beat a LB.

Thanks for putting it into perspective and I agree with you. I like colts and all, but I'm tired of the same old regurgitated line that " if it's not a colt, it's a copy " line. I have tried quite a few different brands and the colt never jumped out to me.

For what you want and the money you're willing to spend i would get the Les Baer. Baer's 1911s are all handfitted with prefection. I would love to get one some day. With that said, I love my Colt and im very glad and proud i own one. Lately, Colt has been putting out some great fitting and functioning 1911s but its one of those things where you need to have it in your hand first. I went through a few different Colts of the same model and picked the best one out. Some were looser fitting and had variations here and there. The one i picked was the gem in the bunch. Mine has been very reliable and shoots great! Colt and Les Baer are on two different levels imo, unless you get something out of the Colt custom shop like the Comat Elite but that will cost a pretty penny.

No question the Baer is a better gun. You can find one from http://www.cj1911heaven.com/ (California friendly) for far less than $2000. I changed out the thin bushings and now have the standard grips on mine. Well over 16,000 rounds through mine and have needed to replace anything except for springs.

Cry once and do it right the first time.

Look around the web, you can find used TRS for around $1500. One sold on calguns last month for $1400OBO, and one sold on Snipershide for a smoking $1075.

CJ1911 is great to deal with. He ships it second day air on his dime to your FFL once you pay for it. I believe from him the TRS is about $1850.

My TRS is my favorite gun I have ever owned. It is tight, accurate, 100% reliable. They come with a 3" or better 10 shot 50 yard ransom-rest mechanical accuracy guarantee. I read in an article a few years back that Les himself said the TRS he test fires shoot more along the lines of 2-2.5".

The Baer will also last forever due to the hardfit build process. They will keep ticking after 10s of thousands of rounds with only minor spring changes, and accuracy will still be superb.

Baer. I have a Springfield which I love, it shoots flawlessly and is accurate. The bear has all of that and is a mechanical work of art. Side by side I can tell the difference. I know you are asking about colt but I just want to point out the baer is something more

Yep! You'll end up paying more for parts and a good smith to get it at the level of a LB. Now if you send a Colt to a top level 1911 smith then you'll have a one of a kind custom pistol. Sending a pistol to a smith gives you the opportunity to have that unique pistol. If you need to get a slide fitted to a frame I highly advise accurail instead of the peening/squeezing technique. When you get a smith talk to him about the personal touches you would like. Not just match barrel accuracy fitted; high sweep beavertail and yadda, yadda, HO-HO-HO... A top smith should have all the tools needed to make that custom serrations, checker and so on.
