Black Powder Pistols

For Festivus this year I was thinking a good present for my father would be black powder pistol (mainly as a wall hanger, but he might possibly shoot it as well).

Are black powder items exempt from the normal DROS, HSC and transfer issues, or would I be better off giving him a gift certificate/card for said item?

I bought my dad in Arizona a black powder pistol a few years back for this reason (and because he's into cowboy guns). Local purchase, with no hoops either in buying or in giving it to him in another state.

The airline did check it out just like any gun; I had to explain to them how to see it wasn't loaded, but I have to do that on all the guns...

It's mostly a wall hanger, but we take it out once a year.

Anyone have input on caliber vs. fun/maintenance factor? .36 vs. .44?

Suggest ordering from Cabella's, as they are cheaper than Midway.

I agree with you but those are Pietros/Piettas and not Uberti.

Once out in the field, try to shoot it as much as you can because cleaning is really pain the behind. I don't really shoot my black powder that much but when I do I will keep shooting it as long as time permits me. Make sure you clean it that night or you'll have lots of rust in the morning. Actually, there will be rust once you get home. I don't know about maintenance since I don't really shoot that much BP.

I only have 44 and the recoil is not really bad. Well I only load 22 gn, maybe I will try 25 next outing. I can't comment on the 36.

Oh yes, does models will outlast the shooter, too bad it doesn't have the look and feel of real BP.

Correct, but nothing wrong with them and they are less costly than Uberti.

I've heard stories of the Ruger old army chain-firing, and after cleaning the ball lodged under the loader, it worked just fine. Other guns usually destroy themselves if they chain fire. In stainless, the Old Army is the best BP made for SHOOTING. Easy cleanup, built like a tank.. not true to original designs, but close enough

Chain firing also has the nasty habit of harming the fire-er. All BP revolvers can chain fire if the application of the grease plug is not sufficient.
