    Handgun purchase/transfer question

About 10 years ago a family friend was asked to hold on to 4-5 handguns for a friend who was moving out of the country. He has not heard from this friend since they have moved, and does not have current contact information. The family friend doesn't want/care to hold on to the firearms, and I'd be more than willing to purchase them from him. How would we go about doing this, or is this even possible?

The initial transfer became an unlawful transfer after 30 days.
There was no continuing crime in him continuing to be in possession of the guns provided that he is not a prohibited person and the guns are not stolen property.

At this point, legally, they are his guns (just not registered).
Meet him at a gun shop and tell them that you want to do a PPT.
They will charge you $35 per gun for the transfer. You will need a handgun safety certificate (that will be $25).
You will also need a trigger lock for each gun.

Once the transfer is complete, the gun will be legally registered in your name. You will be able to return to the gun shop after 10 days (but before 30 days) to pick up your gun(s).

Do you know if there are any property forfeiture laws that could come up?

Only issue would be if it has ever been reported stolen.

Given that he got them 10 years ago, if they were last purchased prior to 1991, they are not currently registered to anyone.
